Question (part of) Resolved - Possible new audio stream on Amz

Status
Not open for further replies.
At the risk of totally derailing the thread, and starting a mixing war, if you want a proper stereo dialogue boost from 5.1 the simplest way to achieve it is to pretend to have a really large centre-speaker, and downmix the stream to something like:

Code:
Ld = C + (-6dB * Lf) - (-9dB * Ls) - (-12dB * Rs)
Rd = C + (-6dB * Rf) + (-12dB * Ls) + (-9dB * Rs)

or just normalise your streams per EBU R 128... or do both ;)

Has anyone verified that the first 640k DD+ 5.1 English audio stream listed is the original or is that an assumption.

I haven't.
But now I can even see four streams... And the one track from another thread is still labelled as Undefined, but the subs always have been showed up as Multiple languages.

What is the general thought regarding which to select if you don't want all of Amazon's crazy DRC/Dialog Boost? What is everyone doing? Downloading whatever and not caring or downloading them all and figuring out which one sounds correct (which would be absolutely insane btw)?

I think most here are just sticking with the first listed audio. I've downloaded all variants before to try to compare them but aside from them having different levels, the "original" (1st track) audio and dialogue boost low are almost the same, so I cannot say. I've even tried comparing the audio from Amazon and Netflix but they use different loudness specs. Lastly I tried looking at the mpd, these tracks are clearly labeled there (en-us_boosteddialoglow_0, en-us_boosteddialogmedium_0, en-us_boosteddialoghigh_0) but AS uses a different naming scheme:
Code:
[download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen265_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
[download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen266_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
[download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen264_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
These names are not very descriptive, so again, no way to tell what is what.

One thing that makes me curious is that for lower bitrate (384k and 512k) 5.1 eac3, only 2 options listed:
Code:
[download config prime] Adding item '384 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen266_audio_en-US_4=384000 : 384000 : ec-3'
[download config prime] Adding item '512 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen266_audio_en-US_4=512000 : 512000 : ec-3'
And it uses "gen266", whatever that means.

It'd be nice to get a definitive answer from the dev team.

I discovered today that the TV series, "CHiPs" was available in HD (1080p | 23.976 fps | 1.78:1 | 224 Kbps DD+ 2.0 | 5 GB per episode on average) via Amazon Freevee.

chips_amazon_freevee_e01.jpg

The audio options available are "English Dialogue Boost: High", "English", "English Dialogue Boost: Medium".

I downloaded all three for the pilot episode though I have no idea whether the order presented in AnyStream is the same as the order presented above.

When comparing the audio I couldn't tell the difference anyway, so I plan to just go with the first of the audio options presented in AnyStream.

(I've since authored this TV series to Blu-ray, each season spread across 3 BD50's. Pics of the Blu-ray menus I created can seen via my Doom9 forum post, here.)

After downloading the first 2 seasons @1080 and seeing the filesize, I ended up going back and just grabbing them @720. To my eyes, it still looks the same and 1080 would really start filling up the plex server mighty fast for the TV shows.

The more I think about this issue, the less certain I become if we're actually downloading the "original" track.

Let's take the Amazon movie "The Lost City of Z" as an example. It comes with the original track and low/medium/high dialogue boosted tracks. I downloaded the movie and selected the first 5.1 640kbps track from the list:
Code:
00:00:28.034 - [Debug] [download config prime] Selected audio track: gen26_audio_en-US_4=640000

AnyStream names this track "gen26" (keep this in mind). We are under the assumption that the first track is the "original" track but this has not been confirmed nor denied by the Redfox team. Now if that were to be true it would mean that "gen26" would be the first listed track for the 192/384/512kbps tracks also, but that's not the case.
Code:
00:00:24.640 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen27_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'
00:00:24.640 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen24_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'
00:00:24.641 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen25_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'
00:00:24.641 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen26_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'

00:00:24.644 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen24_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
00:00:24.645 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen27_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
00:00:24.645 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen25_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'

As you can see from the log above, the 192kbps track lists "gen27" as the first track and for both 384/512kbps tracks, ONLY "gen27" is given as a download option. For the 640kbps track, "gen27" is listed as the third track.

On top of that, the behavior is non-deterministic, the order of the tracks changes with each download. I downloaded the movie again but this time I chose the 5.1 192kbps track only to discover that the order is now different.
Code:
00:00:42.643 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen26_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.643 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen25_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.644 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen24_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.644 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '192 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen27_audio_en-US_4=192000 : 192000 : ec-3'

00:00:42.645 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '384 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen27_audio_en-US_4=384000 : 384000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.645 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '512 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen27_audio_en-US_4=512000 : 512000 : ec-3'

00:00:42.645 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen24_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.646 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen25_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.646 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen27_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'
00:00:42.646 - [Debug] [download config prime] Adding item '640 kbps DD+ 5.1' for ''English (United States)' : en_US : 5.1 : gen26_audio_en-US_4=640000 : 640000 : ec-3'

00:00:59.961 - [Debug] [download config prime] Selected audio track: gen26_audio_en-US_4=192000

Now "gen26" is the first track for 192kbps, "gen27" for the 384/512kbps tracks and "gen24" for 640kbps.

@RedFox 1
What do we have to do, who do we have to talk to, who do we have to email for @Pete to have a look at this issue? I almost feel as if I'm begging now. All we want is for these tracks to be correctly labeled, as they should be.

I author all my downloads to Blu-ray so I need everything at 1920x1080. I'll also be watching this projected at 150" diagonal so I'll take every bit of resolution I can get. ;)

Do you think you might leave a log file?
Sure. I labeled the log files as "1" (1st download, top half of my post) and "2" (2nd download, bottom half of my post).

Not that I didn't attached one in the initial post already...

I am reading this on a phone I didn’t realize this thread, has four pages
That can happen, no problem. But the log is already there for several months now and no one seemed to care so far. Even after more and more people confirmed it, proving that it not only happens for the one season I tried.

I have noticed downloading shows that episodes have random volume. May be related to this. Could be some episodes got downloaded with a boost and others without.

I have also noticed downloading a movie that max bitrate is 224. Then I close and open again and may see 640 or 224 again. Seems random. Just tested it again with "EXmas". Max was 224, closed modal, open again max is 224. Closed modal and open again and now max is 640.

Actually my bitrate issue may be different. I see this in the log for EXmas, opening and closing the download modal. Sometimes the 5.1 audio channels are not available and sometimes they are.
