Little suggestion for the scanner:
When the scanner detects AnyDVD is not running on startup, it automatically starts it. Now when the scanner closes itself (after pressing the button), it does not close AnyDVD. Would be nice if it would auto-close AnyDVD when it was started by the scanner.

@Blazkowicz I'm taking a wild guess here that the scanner doesn't detect AnyDVD running or not, it just runs AnyDVD with a "generate logfile" option, and waits for the log file results. It's not an "autostart," just run "AnyDVD -logfile"

If I'm not way off base with my wild guess, then the scanner has no knowledge of whether AnyDVD was running before it started. It would take effort to build-in detection of AnyDVD running and then restoring the AnyDVD running state after the scanner is done. I think the scanner does what is needed. It's volunteer-built software that performs a very specific function.

I think @SamuriHL has done excellent work and has produced a very handy tool. Thanks!

When you starts the scanner without it doing anything AnyDVD starts automatically (easy to check with e.g. tasklist.exe to check and taskkill.exe to close it).

I agree with Michael that SamuriHL has done a great job providing a very specific tool.

But I also agree with Blaz that if the Scanner needed to turn on AnyDVD to make its report, it should turn it back off when done, if possible.

If a tool needs to change your environment to accomplish its task, it should really return it as it found it.

Same concept as if it needs to mount .iso's to make the report, it should clear the mounts when done.

Which it does...


BUT, two things.

One, as Michael mentions, it may not be easy or even possible to know if AnyDVD was on when the Scanner is invoked and turn it off when finished.


And secondly, and probably more importantly, the Scanner is pretty much at the end of its development lifecycle now.

All we can hope for at this point are fixes for any bugs that might crop up in the tool as it is currently configured.


So Blaz, it might be "the right thing to do", but for these reasons it's an unlikely change.
