I don't know, maybe it's time to give in. I like the better quality the 4k discs can provide but then there are the releases without DV and or different/bad HDR grading and or missing IMAX.

A good deal of my struggle is self-inflicted. Many years ago with blu-rays and DVDs I got hooked on using NAS storage and doing movie only ISOs.

So, sometimes I have issues:
Reading the disc, rare but some brand new discs are pain in the butt.
With the NAS, acting like the file is being written but not really.
CloneBD, adding audio dropouts.
Waiting weeks to watch the title the way I want.

Using an Oppo clone for playback to get the few titles that have Dolby Vision but I don't trust it as it has an 8-bit color bug and all HDR titles are played back in 8-bit color instead of 10-bit color and there's banding. You have to set it to be in forced Dolby Vision mode the whole time which makes me wonder if I'm even getting HDR or Dolby Vision and if I'm getting it correctly.

It's only been the one title so far that I have seen but Marvel's Eternals was totally hosed and super dark. At the time I had Disney Plus and the image was much better.

Then you have the titles that are released without Dolby vision and now IMAX. If 4K discs are still around they may release those versions later but you have to wait who knows how long and then get another disc. So, right now you have to stream them if you want them.

When done correctly I totally believe that the 4K disk has a better video and audio. If the streaming service hasn't totally hosed it in the video looks pretty much the same, I have to get within a few feet of the 77 inch display to see some compression artifacts in most cases. The audio it's harder for me to tell. Years ago when I got the first titles with HD audio, I did some comparisons and compared to regular Dolby Digital there was a big difference in the surround speakers audio quality. I'm not really sure what the streaming services are doing with audio right now. I know most of them are not doing HD audio but I know they have messed with the bit rate on some shows like Stranger Things to improve it.

I don't keep streaming services year round as there's just not that much I want to watch and they make it as difficult as possible to find shows that you want to watch by simply not letting you hide stuff you know you don't want to watch or have already seen but I do currently have HBO Max and I'm debating right now whether to just watch The Batman with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos streamed or wait for the disc and whatever headaches that may come with.

I guess the best setup would be something like Sony's but I don't know if they're still doing it and I think it's expensive and very limited. Where you download the full bitrate video and audio and then play it back locally on their proprietary device.

I'm really sorry to have to admit this, but I just discovered that the machine I have in London had an old version of makemkv on it - when this was first an issue, I was in California, and the machine I use there was properly updated. This means that the opds and reports for everything on my list post Iron Man 3 are spurious: I've rescanned all the discs, and all are definitely supported now: that is American Werewolf in London; Midsommar; Midsommar DC; The Witch. As someone else reported, Iron Man 3 is also supported (yay! thank you - at last!). Testiles, and AnyDVD, I am really sorry to have wasted your time over this.

Only the first and last are inherently disc issues. And the last only for UHD's , ofc.

But there's always some bad with the good.

The good far outweighs the bad for me, so I'm sticking with discs. :=)

Nightmare Alley is fine too.
I had ripped all of the discs to encrypted ISOs - so each of those images generated the bogus OPD when scanned (on a different machine).
Once the original discs were put back in the machine with the rogue makemkv removed they were all recognized as supported and could be decrypted. In each case, they had different OPDs from the corrupted images and matched earlier examples of those titles on the list.

Happened to me as well a while back. :=p

The good news is you now have all your computers installed with the latest AnyDVD (and makeMKV) version, so it should be prevented from re-occurring going forward.

But it's hard to tell the difference and like The Batman and others I'm already paying for them and don't have to go through all the disc stuff. I see why folks are giving up on 4k disc, still a lot of titles I can't get and if they do come they'll likely be missing stuff. I'd need an A/B side by side to tell the difference and even then I don't know. The good is less compression and that is good but I'm not sure it outweighs the bad.

Hmm, with the amount of unsupported discs he has I'm starting to wonder if maybe something else is going on. Most of these have long been supported under different OPDs, which begs the question if these are bad OPDs? Has anyone else reported these OPDs? The US releases for both Mary Shelly's Frankestein and Death of the Nile were supported when I received my copies. With some of the labels I can't imagine they are having different discs replicated or replicated at different plants.

Sure...

It's a purely subjective decision ofc.

I do see that streaming is getting really good quality-wise by some providers.

But regardless, for me even if they looked exactly alike, two things keep me in the disc camp and that's availability of extras and title retention.

I enjoy going through Bonus material, - director commentary and the like. In general, you don't get that streaming.

And the slam dunk is retention - if I have the Blu-Ray/UHD and have made my backups, I'm guaranteed to always have that movie available to watch.

Streaming availability is volatile.


Ofc, we do have AS now to capture those streams to watch when we want. But usually not at UHD resolution.

If and when that's offered across the board by AS for most major titles, I'll maybe revisit my preference.

They're pretty much all recent releases.

I just assumed Tanquen buys a LOT of UHD's and has had bad luck of the draw. :=)


As long as he's using the latest AnyDVD and makeMKV releases, bogus OPD's shouldn't be a possibility.

Never a guarantee only one OPD of a title has been released in the US.

In fact, there are multiples often and they don't necessarily have the same support status.


Good point to bring up rdodolak, but if Tanquen confirms he's using the latest and greatest AnyDVD and makeMKV, everything should be ok...
