some newer disc just won't play back in older versions any more unless you make them into 'movie only' discs

Okay thanks. Bit odd. As i have 8 days left on the trial i upgraded to the latest AnyDVD HD and it ripped fine. I was waiting for the new style of license as i presumed it would be cheaper than the lifetime updates one?

If you still have time you should buy it. It may be more up front but the lifetime version will be cheaper in the long run.
