DVDXCopy isn't outdated. They are under a new company name called DVDXpress.
I prefer using it because it gives a near perfect picture quality and it rips AND compresses at the same time in one step.
Still slower than not compressing at all (and if you know what you're doing, you can burn on the fly as well):
