The Holiday too large for shrink

The Holiday

If you want to process "The Holiday" using DVDShrink - just rip it with the latest RipIt4Me - which results in a set of fully dvd compliant files able to be opened and processed in most any program designed for such operations.

I followed the instructions to backup "The Holiday" using clonedvd2 but even after that, "The Holiday is 5GB large. Even if I reauthor to just the main movie it is still too large....

Any one have ANY suggestions?

I'm reading something else into this and it's kinda scary.
If CloneDVD2 is ripping all the bogus titles to the hard drive, making the resulting rip still too big for Shrink to handle....

That ALSO means that if you use CloneDVD2 alone to transcode the whole DVD9 onto a DVD5, that while it will "work", a lot of disk space is wasted on all those bogus titles that outta be stripped out to begin with. So the resulting quality is suffering a lot more than it has to.

I've seen the posts that say to run the Clone rip through FixVTS.... before Shrink. But what of the poor bastiches that just use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 on "auto-pilot"?? How much of the disk quality is wasted on copying all that Sony crap over to the copy??

Maybe this could account for the problems people are having with bad quality back ups that are getting blamed on poor quality media?

I sincerely doubt it. The file sizes of the junk are small (and I'm sure most people remove them in Clonedvd2).

I think I dissagree on size. They may be small in singular.... but we already know that combined they total enough to make the source folder too big for shrink to compress in one pass. So cumulatively, that's a substantial increase.

I don't see it as to blame for bad quality backups because of the source media, but it could explain why the CloneDVD2 transcoder quality is getting shafted - perhaps more than it deserves even.

I'm not sure most people remove anything in CloneDVD2. Your average noob user could well just put in the source disk and tell CloneDVD2 to put it on the DVD5 with one or two clicks. I mean, that precicely why it's so easy to use. Those of us that post here tend to be more advanced users.

Consider the possibility that Sony realizes they are not going to stop creative/determined folks from finding ways around the corrupt sectors and phony vts's and misleading ifo's they load their newer releases with. Maybe their target is those programs and users that want "1 mouse click and go" type copying functions without concerning themselves about minimizing additional compression, selecting audio tracks and titles, etc.?
Of course I really don't believe stopping casual users who copy will result in increased sales. The real issues revolve around quality and pricing of product - and organized makers/sellers of bootleg products. But Sony can waste their money whatever way they choose, I expect. The more cumbersome Sony makes their products, the more I avoid them.

The four friends that I know use the program dont even remove foreign language tracks, much less anything else. They all got it as it was the most idiot proof one click option. Load movie, click go, load blank dvd, done. They are totally lost at using other options and have really no interest as this generally does what they want with no headache.

You may well be right. :(
Consider this.... Sony didn't even include a directors commentary, or the theatrical trailers on the 2 Disk Casino Royal set. Why? Rumor has it, so they can sell a "Collectors Edition" later, once every sucker on the planet bought thier 1st DVD release.

Now, I'd never tell everyone who reads this to make 12 copies of Casino Royal and pass them out to 12 friends and family for free (would only cost about $3US with the Best Buy sale) - and tell them to wait for the re-release to actually buy it. I'd not suggest that. But wouldn't it be nice if every single one of us who could copy a disk all decided to stick it up Sony's anus and break it off - all at the same time? :D :D

My point exactly. The real strength of the AnyDVD / CloneDVD2 combination is precisely that it's so freakin' easy for even a noob to back up a DVD - and have a good chance of success on the 1st try.

A lot of us veterans of The DVD Wars know all the tricks and work-arounds etc etc. So the ones Sony is trying to hurt the most here is the unsophisticated user. And so far.... I'd score the game as a dead heat.

Holiday movie.

What is with SHRINK and DEFAB?? I only use ANYDVD and The latest update to Clonedvd2. It copied perfect...: I have yet to find the first dvd that I can't copy. I've been doing this for over a year. My problems all ended when I bought ANYDVD and CLONDVD2. Thanx

Before you derail this thread into another CloneDVD vs Other Software fiasco: Please read the whole thread. We're just talking about the excess Sony crap that's surviving a rip-trip through AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. If you back up to a DL DVD9 it won't directly impact you. If you're compressing the DVD down to a DVD5, then it will impact you, whether you know it or not.

No Problem here with this title

Like others, I have never had a movie that AnyDVD & CloneDVD 2 won't back up. These 2 programs work exceptionally well on every movie I buy. CloneDVD 2 has the Best Transcoder I have ever seen, bar none:agree: .

Yeah, it's been a while since I encountered a DVD I can't copy. I first used DVD Decrypter then the DVD Shrink to process The Holiday DVD but there was an error message that appeared in the DVD Shrink. So, I tried the ANYDVD but once I used the DVD shrink again, the same error appeared. Is there a fix to this? I am only using these 3 softwares to rip DVDs. Thanks!

Your going to need to run the results from Dvddecrypter through FixVts before using Dvdshrink.

What am I doing wrong?!?!?!?!?!?!?

If you just want the main movie, do this:
Right click on Anydvd on the toolbar, and select "rip-video dvd to harddisk". After you're finished ripping you should be able to import the main movie only into Shrink (Click "reauthor" and then browse to the location of the video_ts folder. Then drag and drop the main movie over to the left).

I rebooted and tried again (for the 7th time...)....it worked this time... I don't know why it didn't work before... I didn't make any changes....
