Summer will bring a GPU war

*sigh*

The rumours/reports I'm reading all seem to indicate the new high end cards from Nvidia and ATI are going to turn the room with my computer in it into a sauna. :(

Tom's Hardware, NVIDIA, ATI

Tom's Hardware had 2 articles on the 16th. Now, I don't take everything said on that site at face value but it's interesting to read nonetheless.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 260/280 Review

What truly shocked me was the power consumption of the 280 GTX being 126/310 watts (idle/test drive unlimited 25*16). That's better when idle and only 2 degrees when loaded above an 8800 Ultra.

With temperatures the 280 GTX beats the 9800 GTX and 8800 Ultra. Check the article. It's lengthy.

Thanks. The noise level appears to be pretty brutal on full load.

Nvidia 9800 GTX+?

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/9702/nvidia_surprise_with_9800_gtx_graphics_card/index.html

The GeForce 9800 GTX+ takes the highly efficient G92-based GeForce 9800 GTX and offers unbeatable value for value conscious gamers.

Key product points:
• GeForce 9800 GTX+ is the best single card price/performance at $229; the original GeForce 9800 GTX will transition to $199
• Processor clock of 1836MHz and graphics clock of 738MHz
• GeForce PhysX support! World’s only physics API for both the CPU and the GPU!
• Support for CUDA-based applications, including Folding@Home and Badaboom video transcoding applications.
• Support for 2-way and 3-way SLI

I'd be interested to see the power consumption and heat from that. It's interesting that word of this was quietly released now.

Yeah, the lack of Directx 10.1 support is still annoying, but that is a nice price point.

Even the 4850 outperforms the current 9800GTX in Crysis with AA enabled: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/724-7/preview-ati-radeon-hd-4850.html
