Data Compression Artifacts with H Downloads?

Recently I downloaded a current Hulu series with a lot of dark scenes and noticed the relatively small size of the files (720p) at about 450MB. On playback the dark scenes were very blocky, which is not the case when viewed using an Apple TV device.

Is this common for Hulu? It's the first time I have noticed this with an AS download.

Thanks!

I would not call it a common Hulu thing. Especially if it's something older it just means the original source was not great.

Or you are playing 480p on an 80" HDTV

I guess that is just the compression, I cannot speak for Hulu itself but since it is 720p and if they encode it in a similar way like NF does, then the quality is not that great for some things.

The likely cause is the data compression causing a loss of detail in shadows/dark areas. The series is a new release.

I understand that the streaming services present different resolutions to different devices. Thus, an Apple TV device may "see" different data streams than a web browser. Do the streaming services treat all browsers the same? Will some see different resolutions or different levels of data compression? I tried the same episode on an Edge browser and while the blockiness did not show, the dark scenes had little detail as compared the Apple TV device. The computer monitor is a nice ASUS 4k photography monitor and the graphics card is of similar quality, so I don't think it is a limitation of the monitor (other than size).

Interesting.

I usually treat Hulu as a last resort because their transcodes can be absolutely horrendous. I recently bought an entire series (seven seasons) on Amazon because it's not available on blu-ray and the Hulu version is just awful (the video wasn't too bad, but the audio has artifacts in it).

Would you guys try again with 1.4.0.0 , we made some great changes.

Downloaded with 1.4.0.0 and the file size is exactly the same. Won't be able to view it until after the weekend.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks!
