The disc is new with no scratches or grease marks. I've given it a little wash but that doesn't seem to have changed anything. Also, I've realised the disc doesn't play properly in VLC so I guess it's a dodgy press.

Just thought I'd add that if I try to play the movie on my PC direct from the disc with AnyDVD running and VLC, it plays fine. If I skip to the middle or end of the movie, it's OK. I haven't tried playing through the layer transition point, I'll do that now.

@SamuriHL - really good point. Elysium is nearly 100GB so a triple-layer disc... I'll bear that in mind next time I have issues and will crosscheck with the size :)

If you had it specifically with handbrake, I don't know if that's the same issue as it would suggest your drive and discs are read fine by the OS and it's the app that takes time to figure it out. Regarding Elysium, I enevtually managed to get the drive to read it but it was slower (constant...
