Unable to install VCD in XP VM (VirtualBox)

I have a highly optimized WinXP virtual machine (running in VirtualBox on my Linux laptop) - by "highly optimized", I mean that all non-essential services are disabled and, when it's booted up, only 17 processes are running. Everything works great - wireless networking, audio, etc. BUT VCD hangs while "installing driver". If anyone can shed any light on the VCD driver's dependencies and/or a log file that might give me some clues, I'd be much obliged.
