AnyDVD repeatedly scans, then fails with error: WARNING! Failed to read DVD! with 4 possible reasons. The disc is brand new, so it shouldn't be dirty or damaged. Thanks for your help.

Highly likely it's defective. Being 'new' is irrelevant. Extremely unlikely to be a protection issue considering the age of the title.
 
I had no problems backing that movie up and that was like 2010 if that timeline is correct. Faulty media or bad drive. If what your saying was true those problems are a 2010 and this is 2016 that can't be a new problem but something with your media or drive is faulty.
