The Terminator Bug

I resolved this problem myself and I'm not sure if anyone else knows or has seen this before, I just want to help. This 'bug' or trick affects The Terminator Blu-Ray. Multi Region. Published in 2015. MGM Logo.

When I tried to convert this movie to any format with CloneBD it would automatically complete after five seconds giving me a 57mb file. After some thinking I previewed the movie, the issue is the roaring lion introduction logo from MGM.

After the lion roars there's a jump that looks like a resolution change, it still appears to be part of the main movie in CloneBD. To resolve this issue we need to get rid of the logo. Simple with CloneBD.

Setup CloneBD to convert The Terminator and get to the Selection screen. The Main Feature movie should be selected already. Go to the timeline for the Main Feature movie. On the left edge of the timeline box, there's a bar that can be grabbed. Grab the bar and move from 0:00 to 0:33 seconds. That's it.

Sorted.

Nearly sorted - in order to actually fix CloneBD, so this workaround will not be necessary anymore, can you post a CloneBD log file of the failed process?
(type the Alt key on the completion screen).

I ripped The Terminator to .iso with AnyDVD hd. I then mounted the .iso with Virtual CloneDrive. I then treat it as a Blu-ray disc in CloneBD. I hope these logs help.

Logs of original disc would be better. And just a hint, you don't have to mount the iso's, CloneBD does have the capability open iso's on its own :)

I've left all of the headaches and problem discs until last. I've had to use some unorthodox methods to get CloneBD to work in some cases, protected discs/images, unprotected discs/images and the trick above. For example Saw II just wouldn't work unless I accepted an full quality H264 transcode rather than just keeping the lossless video option like I did for every other movie.

Then there's An Idiot Abroad Series 1 + 2 which appears to be green and actually encodes/transcodes that way, see Idiot.jpg below.

The log of the actual Terminator disc is attached now, both AnyDVD and CloneBD.

I had the same issue with CloneBD when ripping Terminator 1 (Remaster version), I too would get a 60MB file containing only the MGM lion. I'm not encoding anything, only pushing original audio and video streams to a .mkv-file.
I circumvented the issue by letting CloneBD copy the BD structure to my hard drive. Then I told CloneBD to use the copy of the BD on my hard drive as a source and make a .mkv-file with the original video and audio streams. For some reason it worked and I now have the full movie in one neat file for later use. I don't think the issue lies with Anydvd since I could use my hard drive copy just fine. I've attached both CloneBD log-files just in case.

Now that I think of it, it is probably what you said in post #3 Cowchucker.

I tried this tonight too, still not fixed 4 months later. I did exactly what was stated and that worked. I have about 40 movies to go now.

The problem with this movie is that it uses different SPS/PPS structures within the original film. An SPS/PPS is in a way a format definition of the movie and should be fixed or unchanged for the whole movie. The SPS/PPS for instance contains among other things the resolution (width/height), the frame rate, colors and so on.

After the MGM logo the SPS changes which is not a big problem for Blu-ray movies. But it is for .mkv files because in .mkv files you can only define one SPS. If the movie is completely recompressed then the resulting video always has just a single. If it is not compressed then only the first part is playable. CloneBD now tries to trick software players by sending a new SPS/PPS for every frame after it changes. This works quite well for most players but unfortunately not for all. Especially some Panasonic players have issues with that have have a hickup for a few seconds after the change, but will work then.

-----

Now, regarding the resulting video size: According to the log I can see that the movie stops after 73,039,872 bytes which is about 60 MiB. I have to investigate this.

That doesn't explain why CloneBD can make a fully working .mkv-file with untouched audio- and video stream when CloneBD is using a BD-structure copy from a hard drive as source. The only time I've encountered a problem is if I'm using the original disk in the BD-drive as source. I'm not sure about how the source code for CloneBD works, but the debugg log is different from BD-drive to HD. Examples below where one log suppresses "Stream not selected" messages. I'd presume both logs/jobs do not select those streams, but you probably know more about that than I do.

The only thing I know is that I do have a working .mkv-file with Terminator on (original audio/video) and CloneBD did all the work.

One thing of note is that Clip3 (MGM?) has a smaller file size when I use the hard drive copy as a source. Not sure why that is. Currently at work, so I don't have the Mediainfo to compare it with.

If you are referring to my .txt logs in post #6, that 60MiB-file is the MGM logo sequence in front of the movie

Edit: I use the latest VLC and the playback is not the issue. The issue, I have at least, is that CloneBD only copies the MGM segment to .mkv when I use the original BD as a source. It stops after 1-3 seconds and says it has finished the job.

We are currently a bit puzzled about this problem. Let me summarize first and please correct me if we made a wrong assumption

1) you created a copy of Terminator 1 with CloneBD and only selected the main movie and a handful of audio languages
2) now you used that copy to create a .mkv file - this file works
3) now you try to create a .mkv file from the original disc - this file does not work and only contains the MGM logo

This assumption is according to your logs. The .mkv file created from the original disc in your optical drive only has about 60 MB. But the .mkv file created from a CloneBD copy (which only has a subset of clips and audio streams) streams to work, it processedabout 26 GB of video data.

Can you post an AnyDVD log of both images, please? The original disc and the HDD image (CloneBD copy).

1) Only the main English audio/video is selected with two subtitle options.
2) Yes, that is correct.
3) Yes, that is correct. I selected the same options as in 1), the only difference being the source.

Attachments: Seems like the MGM also contain subtitles, which means the MGM clip on the BD disc is slightly larger as it would need to have all the subs and all of the different audio streams. It actually has 6 different audio streams!
Attachments: The only way to create a anydvd log of the BD-copy would be to install a virtual drive or how does that work?

1: Yes, Only selecting the movie audio and subtitles.
2: The .mkv is created but is only an 60mb video containing the MGM lion logo.
3. In my case the source is ripping from the original disc or an AnyDVD HD created .ISO

I'll get you a log in a few hours as I'm currently ripping.

Mind you that Fabian's 2) is dependent on 1). Since you said it worked earlier in this thread, your working file is made from a source that is NOT the original disc in a BD-drive?

None of my sources will produce a working .mkv automatically they only produce the 60mb MGM logo.
The trick to make a working copy from an unworking source is below. Picture Attached.

1. Go to the screen where you select which movie track and audio you want to use.
2. Move your mouse cursor to the left edge of Main Feature #1 or #2. A draggable cursor appears.
3. Drag the line to the right until it says about 35 seconds.
4. Encode your movie.

The MGM logo will be missing and most of the Carolco logo but you'll have a fully working movie mkv.

That sounds very strange indeed. You do ofc use the 7.6.9.5 version of Anydvd HD and 1.0.8.0 of CloneBD? For curiosity sake, try downloading Handbrake. Then set it to encode with low video settings and see what happens.

It works fine Renascent. It literally is just CloneBD being buggy, but the bug looks very unique. There's something at the end of the logo that causes it. Look at the behaviour in a software Blu-Ray player. Am I right?

I've not seen that happen on any other movie I've ripped. I wonder if any other MGM movies have that logo segment and do this, but I don't own another MGM movie like The Terminator.

I am starting to wonder how often the software will be updated too, I would expect many changes and updates for a program that's so young.

I was missing the first terminator film and had to buy the Terminator quadrilogy as the 'single' Terminator movie is not available anymore where I live.
Anyways, while encoding I got the MGM problem. I solved it with the slider workaround and no probs at all after that.
However, I did have to scratch my head for a while before I started to google things up...

Thx for the 'fix' guys.
