I have a Sony VGN CR590 laptop. It has a Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz processor and 3GB RAM,
running Windows XP SP3. Graphics are Intel Mobile 965.

Is this hardware fast enough to rip most Blu-Ray movies with AnyDVD HD?

What, if any, problems will I encounter if I try to rip most BD movies with hardware of this age?

If the laptop’s hardware is good enough for AnyDVD HD to rip most Blu-Rays with decent efficiency,
please recommend a suitable external BD burner.

Your CPU doesn't limit the ripping/decryption speed, but USB 2.0 does.

Both LiteOn eHBU312 and LG BE14NU40 aren't rip-locked and have an USB 3.0 interface.
Though i don't know whether the Asus BW-12D1S-U (USB & eSATA) is rip-locked, it's my favorite because Asus uses Pioneer drives.
Your Sony most likely doesn't have USB 3.0 ports - maybe buying an USB 3.0 ExpressCard is worth considering.

Or, if you have an eSATA port and if you can still get that drive: BE12LU30 or BE12LU38

I'm no friend of slim drives, therefore only half-height drive recommendations from me.
Having said that, a friend of mine is very contented with his LG BT20N (or was it BT30N ?).

As to capability, it probably will do it, but expect very long time frame for doing it. Especially if you use editing software to shrink it down to 25 Gig. Some of my earliest attempts took all night to rip and burn, and can't verify if that was with XP or Vista. With newer computers, that is shaved down to a few hours, also depending on how powerful a system someone has. Also with that old a system, you will have to leave it alone during the whole process, don't even think of "I'll just check my email". Don't want to discourage you, just giving a heads up. And you are right to think of going to an external drive over relacing your existing drive.

Thanks guys. At least it looks hopeful that my Sony’s T9300 processor will suffice. Notice here too
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-ultra/spec_en_US.html where its said that “Blu-ray Disc playback:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66GHz)....”

I then found this http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core2-Duo-T9300-vs-Intel-Core2-Duo-E6750 showing that the E6750 just nudged past the T9300.

So, I guess I’m not too bad off CPU-wise.

No, my Sony has no e-SATA port; just USB 2.0. Is the jury still out on which is better, at least when using external BD drives?
See http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413310,00.asp

Express card adapters for both are available, of course.

But when you say that some BD drives are “rip-locked”, does that mean that they have firmware (burned into their EPROM?) preventing them from…..doing what?

BTW, I have a Sony BWU-500S and a Panasonic SW-5584 BD burner. Are either of them rip-locked-and if so, what, if anything, can be done about it?

If either of my burners are good ones, can the best one be installed in an external powered SATA chassis and used with my Sony laptop via an e-SATA express card? If yes, can you suggest such a chassis and a card?

Will that give me a pretty good BD ripping system for using AnyDVD HD?

Rip-locked means that the reading speed of Blu-ray movie discs is limited in the firmware.
For some drives that means just a small, for others a tremendous loss of speed.

Your Sony is a LiteOn iHBS112 clone and therefore shouldn't be rip-locked.
LiteOn Blu-ray burners in general are among the fastest reading devices.
If yes, can you suggest such a chassis and a card?
Sorry, but i have zero experience with such enclosures, and it's been a while since i read there are only few providing eSATA with ODD support.
According to this thread this may be one of them: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392031
