This is relatively new --- I've used this program for years without trouble until maybe my latest update (which is 6.6.1.5). The program is Sonic DigitalMedia Plus v7. It doesn't even work with unprotected discs unless I enable the Aggressive I/O mode. I'm attaching the logfile, of course.

For a while I thought my hardware might have been teetering on the brink, but it works just fine if I do the same discs with ImgBurn+Shrink.

My big guess is the program Sonic doesn't work well with Anydvd. Since it is a Roxio program I would say dump it. Sonic aka Roxio doesn't work well with Anydvd.

You might try using it with the original commercial disc. Since this is a copy, you never know how good this disc is. And since it doesn't look like there is protection on the disc AnyDVD isn't needed.

It is the original commercial disc...

It is the original commercial disc. See: http://store.singahe.com/latebloomer1.html

That's beside the point, though...it happens with everything now, and disabling AnyDVD doesn't help. It also interferes with copying DATA files to blank CDs.

There is no protection on the disc, so you don't need AnyDVD. If it still happens with AnyDVD disabled, then the problem isn't AnyDVD. I didn't see it in the filters list, but the problem you are describing (especially with writing files to a blank disc) sounds like packet writing software like Roxio's Drag-to-Disc or DirectCD.

Have you tried the Roxio/Sonic forum since it is their software?

Ummm...

Maybe you missed the point: I don't have a problem since I activate the Aggressive I/O Mode. In the info for recent updates, it says we should let them know of software problems where this proves necessary, implying that some features of updates may cause this sort of problem where it didn't exist before...all I'm doing is bringing this to their attention.

The same thing happens with protected discs --- it's just a coincidence that the disc I grabbed to make the logfile doesn't have protection.

RATHER MORE TO THE POINT: I can't create data discs on blank CDs unless I actually uninstall AnyDVD any more. This is new in the last 2 weeks or even less. Aggressive I/O doesn't help with this new problem, though uninstalling AnyDVD fixed the problem in a twinkling of an eye.

Oh, yeah --- I also upgraded to 6.6.1.9

An original disc would never state DVD-R unless it is a very cheaply made porn video.

Hardly

This turns out not to be the case. In addition to the disc I mentioned, all DVDs produced by the Australian Children's Television Foundation are DVD-R. This approach is hardly unique, and to suggest that the ACTF is distributing porn is probably not a helpful approach.

Hopefully James will see this or one of the mods will get him to look at your log. I have no other suggestions.
