I am using AnyDVD and CloneDVD to back up DVD movies that I own
to a home theater PC. I play the movies off the hard drive using the
Windows Media Center DVD player software. My issue does NOT involve
burning movies. The drive I read the DVD's with is a DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray
combo drive, and I record all of my movies at 100% quality.

MOST movies work fine with my configuration. But sometimes:

- Backup the ENTIRE disc to a folder using CloneDVD/AnyDVD. So far
as I can tell (i.e., reported to the screen) the CloneDVD process
completes Normally. [in fact, I don't think I've ever had CloneDVD
report an error to me]
- Subsequently, playback of this movie from the hard drive freezes at a
particular point (same exact frame with multiple tries)
- The DVD is clean, and I can watch the movie from the DVD without any
trouble so far as I can tell. I can even 'watch' it in the CloneDVD
preview panel without visible trouble.
- I go into the file system folder on the HD, where the movie is recorded,
and the MPEG movie file for the portion of the movie that's 'bad' has
been abruptly terminated. I.e., it just ends where playback is freezing
up. When I view the file-system of the source DVD, this MPEG file is,
say, ~1GB but it's only ~75MB on the 'recorded' version.
- I tried just a raw file-copy of the source DVD file to my HD; and, it will
play, but, there are still a few glitches as far as skipping through
chapters.

My questions:
#1. What is causing this problem?
#2. How can I fix it?
#3. How can I make CloneDVD report an error, instead of saying a movie
has been copied 100% (*when it hasn't been)?
#4. If I forced CloneDVD to transcode the movie (e.g., changed quality to
say 99%) would that make a difference? I haven't tried this, but it seems
like possibly it would force CloneDVD to process the data more.

1. Use Anydvd 6.5.3.1: click http://static.slysoft.com/SetupAnyDVD.exe

You may need to reboot after installing if prompted to do so.

2. Click the red fox icon on your toolbar. Click "default". Click "ok".

3. Use Clonedvd 2.9.2.2: http://static.slysoft.com/SetupCloneDVD2922.exe

4. Select "Clone Dvd" from the main menu. Select "dvd+/-R DL" near the quality bar. On the output page, select "dvd files".

5. Run your dvd playback software program. Select the "video_ts.ifo" file that you ripped in step 4 as the source file for playback.

6. If you still have problems, then . . .

A)
a) Ensure Anydvd is running.
b) Put the problematic original movie dvd in your burner. Wait for Anydvd to scan the disc.
c) Right click the red fox icon on your toolbar.
d) Select "Create Logfile"
e) Wait for Anydvd to create a log file.
f) A pop-up screen will appear. Take note of the location where Anydvd created the logfile and the logfile's name. Click "ok".
g) Windows Explorer will open, and you will see a zip file called "Anydvd_Info_titleofmydisc.zip" (or something similar; see step f)
h) When replying or posting in the Slysoft forums, look for the icon that looks like
attach.gif
(in other words, look for the paperclip after clicking "quote" or when creating a new thread)
i) If you don't see that paperclip icon, click the "go advanced" button. You should see that icon now. Click the paperclip.
j) A small pop-up screen should appear (if it doesn't please ensure your browser is enabled to allow pop-ups from the Slysoft forums)
k) Click the "Browse" button, and locate and select the .zip file you created.
l) click "upload"
m) Close the window. When you submit reply, or submit a new thread, the .zip file will be attached automatically for us to take a look at

B) State the full a)error message(s) you encountered (click "details"), b)tell us what program(s) you were using when you received the error message(s), and c) describe in detail what you were doing when you received the error message(s). What problem are you having exactly?

C) Click http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=5091 to see if your question has already been answered

D) Provide the Clonedvd log file after Clonedvd has finished--or after you receive an error message.

attachment.php

i)In the white area under the tab labelled "Log", right click and select "save as".
ii)Select where you want to save the log, and then save it.
iii) The log will be a .txt file. Zip it up using Winzip or another program. If the text file is small enough, you should be able to upload it anyway. Otherwise, use Winzip.
iv) When replying or posting in the Slysoft forums, look for the icon that looks like
attach.gif
(in other words, look for the paperclip after clicking "quote" or when creating a new thread)
v) If you don't see that paperclip icon, click the "go advanced" button. You should see that icon now. Click the paperclip.
vi) A small pop-up screen should appear (if it doesn't please ensure your browser is enabled to allow pop-ups from the Slysoft forums)
vii) Click the "Browse" button, and locate and select the .zip file (or .txt file) that you created.
viii) click "upload"
ix) Close the window. When you submit reply, or submit a new thread, the .zip file will be attached automatically for us to take a look at[/b]

1. What is causing this problem?

Possibly you're not ripping the entire disc (make sure everything is checked)--but more likely you're selecting the wrong file for playback

#3. How can I make CloneDVD report an error, instead of saying a movie
has been copied 100% (*when it hasn't been)?

I'm not convinced that it hasn't been.

If I forced CloneDVD to transcode the movie

No. Don't compress

CloneDVD Glitches

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am currently at work and
will not be able to follow the steps you've suggested until
this evening.

However, please Let me clarify a few points:

"Possibly you're not ripping the entire disc
(make sure everything is checked)"

EVERYTHING is checked

"but more likely you're selecting the wrong file for playback"

Please note that I play through ~2 hrs of movie perfectly
fine, then hang (repeatedly) on a particular frame. If it makes a
difference, I select a folder for playback, using the MyMovies2
plugin.

"I'm not convinced that it hasn't been..."

*source* file size = 1GB
*copied* file size = 75MB (and it doesn't work)
there's no compression. *How* could this be copied correctly?

- One other thing, I'm using CloneDVD version 1

Thanks again for your assistance.

Yeah, again, select the video_ts.ifo file for playback

using the MyMovies2
plugin

Try WMP. Select the "video_ts.ifo" file

If the original disc contains structural protection, the ripped file may be correctly split across several other files.

One other thing, I'm using CloneDVD version 1

Then you either aren't using the same program being supported here--or you're in dire need of updating.

Please verify the version

T

- One other thing, I'm using CloneDVD version 1

Please verify that when you start "CloneDVD" you see its full name on the title bar as

CloneDVD2

and if that is now verified, click "About" at the lower left and verify the release number as this MUST be 2922.

Clone DVD Glitches

- I'm using the original CloneDVD by Slysoft; it probably does need
updating.
- will have to do this after work

- FWIW, the disc does not have structural copy protection, according
to AnyDVD.

Again, thanks for assistance & will f/u after I have updated the
program.

- I'm using the original CloneDVD by Slysoft

The original Clonedvd is from Elaborate Bytes, and the program is still officially developed by Elaborate Bytes. Slysoft is a reseller--not the developer of Clonedvd.

I downloaded the update last p.m., and so far as I can tell
(based on two previously problematic titles) everything's working
fine at this point.

From what I could see during movie ripping (*which necessitated
multiple retries of bad data sectors), my playback issues were secondary
to problems reading/ripping the original source DVD. I don't quite understand
why the errors were (apparently) being ignored but there's no point
in spending further time on it; the current version of Clone-DVD 2 seems
to detect/handle them appropriately.

Thanks to all who responded; will keep you updated with any
further issues.
