I am using AnyDVD and CloneDVD to back up DVD movies that I own
to a home theater PC. I play the movies off the hard drive using the
Windows Media Center DVD player software. My issue does NOT involve
burning movies. The drive I read the DVD's with is a DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray
combo drive, and I record all of my movies at 100% quality.
MOST movies work fine with my configuration. But sometimes:
- Backup the ENTIRE disc to a folder using CloneDVD/AnyDVD. So far
as I can tell (i.e., reported to the screen) the CloneDVD process
completes Normally. [in fact, I don't think I've ever had CloneDVD
report an error to me]
- Subsequently, playback of this movie from the hard drive freezes at a
particular point (same exact frame with multiple tries)
- The DVD is clean, and I can watch the movie from the DVD without any
trouble so far as I can tell. I can even 'watch' it in the CloneDVD
preview panel without visible trouble.
- I go into the file system folder on the HD, where the movie is recorded,
and the MPEG movie file for the portion of the movie that's 'bad' has
been abruptly terminated. I.e., it just ends where playback is freezing
up. When I view the file-system of the source DVD, this MPEG file is,
say, ~1GB but it's only ~75MB on the 'recorded' version.
- I tried just a raw file-copy of the source DVD file to my HD; and, it will
play, but, there are still a few glitches as far as skipping through
chapters.
My questions:
#1. What is causing this problem?
#2. How can I fix it?
#3. How can I make CloneDVD report an error, instead of saying a movie
has been copied 100% (*when it hasn't been)?
#4. If I forced CloneDVD to transcode the movie (e.g., changed quality to
say 99%) would that make a difference? I haven't tried this, but it seems
like possibly it would force CloneDVD to process the data more.
