PowerDVD Ultra upgrade...for some...

Yes, My drive came with 3516a, I downloaded the 3516b up date, and applied it, then it wouldn't play back BD-R or BD-RE discs as it told me I needed a critical up date. When I said yes to the critical up date it downloaded a 68MB file which when I ran it back dated my version to 3319. I build systems for a living and have 6 systems with the LG Writer on them and they've all done the same thing

Thanks for clearing that up.

What model LG drives do you typically use? Also, did you first have to initiate a BD-R / BD-RE movie before the critical update was offered as a download? I wonder if this is a general issue or if it only occurs in some OSes,…or what?

I didn't try an original disc first, but can try it on a system on Monday to see if it comes up with the same message.

Drive is
LG GGW-H20L Super Multi Blu-Ray Writer & HD-ROM Reader

I was just curious as to what if anything actually triggered the critical update prompt and subsequent fallback. Being able to reliably repeat this phenomenon would be great.

Well the ones I did it on was when I tried to play a BD-RE that I'd created in Adobe Encore

Great, thanks again for the info.

I have already planned to buy some BD-RE discs but my LG GGW-H20L doesn’t get here until Monday. I’ll give it a shot though probably with some home movies using Nero or the included Cyberlink software. I don’t have Adobe Encore but I think I have Premier.

Cyberlink has removed the feature allowing you to veiw HD from your hard drive on the newer versions, do to copy right rules. I am sticking to the old OEM and asking for a refund on my full version license.

Yup, he's right. The only reason Cyberlink wants you to upgrade from 3319a to 3319b is because 3319a is the last version that will play BD and BD+ off of your HDD. Anthing after 3319a (e.g.: 3319f) won't work with a title like Fantastic Four 2.

Well, surely, users can run multiple versions of PDVDU7 either on one system or multiple systems. This way you can have your 3319a cake and eat it too.

***edit***

Question,…

If you have an LG (or other) drive and run the latest OEM version of PDVDU7 can you download and install an older OEM LG PDVDU7 patch for an LG (or other) or is this disallowed? Part of the reason I ask is because from my observations Cyberlink doesn’t provide actual patches for their software. Instead they provide full version upgrades with a detection program for previous installed versions for validation.

Region coding on Bluray is a strange beast at times.

Although I have been corrected that Casino Royale (A) is not BD+ and can be region free'd, I have only been able to get it to play if I disable region code removal in AnyDVD and set region code to A in PowerDVD 2911. Any other setting in PowerDVD or AnyDVD and it reports a region mismatch.

I have come across a couple of titles that are region B (or maybe A,B,C) which AnyDVD insists are region A & C only, yet it will change the region coding to B and it works fine in PowerDVD set to region B.

I can't use PowerDVD 3319a as it windowboxes video to 1600x900 on Nvidia 8600GT 1920x1440 display under XP. Neither 2911 or 3516 do this, but have their own caveats.

2911 is my preferred version of PowerDVD as it supports software decoding and plays back most titles (although maybe it has region coding issues). I use 3516 for titles that don't work with 2911, but it means I can only play ISO from HDD and not BD+ titles.

I'm really looking forward to BD+ removal with AnyDVD and improvement of BDedit to remove menu-related impediments.

This is exactly what my system did, I had 3516b downloaded their 'critical update' installed it over the top of my current version and it backdated it to 3319 and plays my BD+ from the harddrive (haven't tried any profile 1.1 discs yet

Simpsons BD region 1 US rips and plays perfect from my hard drive with PowerDVd 3104a

I tried to run Simpsons region 2 rip with PDVD 3104 release. It stuttered, and showed only some frames on.
Rip was done on a LG GGW_H20L.
It runs fine on release 3319a, so I stay with this.

I am also staying with 3319a, I had problems with regular DVDs stuttering and audio sync problems with the newest version 3516. I wish there was an alternative to this program.

Right then,…

I received my LG GGW-H20L Burner yesterday. The PowerDVD Ultra 7 version is “7.3.3104a“. I was expecting something more recent but this is good for now.
