The H20L is riplocked, the firmware of this drive hinders it from reading out movie DVDs and BDs properly:

I never knew there was such a thing as "riplocked"!!! I thought the Panasonic drives were the only ones to watch out for!

Are those four LG drives listed in the CDFreaks thread the only known ones that have this?

LG call it something like silent drive technology which is supposed to enhance your HTPC experience. It's just another word for RIPLOCK though. Riplock used to be so basic on the old NEC 1100 drives. It looked for the VIDEO_TS folder and throttled the read speed, Herrie changed the firmware to VIDEO_XX and it was gone. Apparently newer versions look for AACS/CCS content to decide to throttle, probably on the instructions of the studios.

Yeah I also have the LG GGW-H20L and I remember seeing somewhere they said to load your firmware(in my case YL05) into MediaCodeSpeedEdit and then check the "Increase Read Speed" tab then save the firmware and then flash your drive but I was worried about doing this. It apparently will void your warranty and could possibly brick your burner so I'm not sure if I would want to mess around with it.

I use the GGW with the patched firmware YL05 and it works without any problems.
