Layer Break Problem with CloneDVD

I think the layer break problem can not be explained with a bug in CloneDVD 2.9.1.2. I believe it was an issue with AnyDVD.

Copying "SILENT HILL" (region 2) Clone DVD was able to remove the layer break (AnyDVD 6.3.0.0), although it was a Sony-Pictures DVD. "The Contractor" and "Casino Royale" are from Sony-Pictures, too, but CloneDVD was not able to remove the layer break (AnyDVD 6.1.9.6 and 6.1.9.3).

Would be great if other users could post their experiences...

No. It's an issue with Clonedvd's method of layer break removal (probably has something to do with the way the program examines .ifos).

Saying "Sony" is meaningless, since not all Sony releases use the exact same protection, much less the exact same number of "bad sectors".

Burning some movies the layer break do still exist on the copy although CloneDVD 2.9.1.2 said "layer break succesfully removed". I thought CloneDVD would delete the break (< 1second) so there should not be any break while watching the copy. How is this possible??

If you use DL blank media a layer break position will still exist no matter what.

Oh... What is the sense then CloneDVD removing layer break?

1. For single layer blank media the layer break needs to be removed

2. For DL blank media, Clonedvd needs to create a new layer break position (typically around the last chapter on the first layer of the blank disc). The original layer break position needs to be removed.

Does this mean that if CloneDVD do not remove the layer break there will be two layer breaks on the copy (one of the original disc and one of the blank media)?

There can only be one layer break position, but if the original is not removed properly it's possible for an additional pause to occur (I think).

Thank you very much (I am glad that finally somebody was able to give me a reliable answer concerning this issue).

I normally prefer to retain the original layer break position. Perhaps, Elby/Slysoft should consider adding an option like "retain original layer break position" when back up DL in the next release.

That's what Clonecd is for.

Transcoder based applications such as dvdshrink, nero recode, and clonedvd, cannot retain the original layer break position because they remaster. click http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=685

Really? I always thought dvdshrink could retain the original layer break if we uncheck the 'remove layer break' option, or not? I seem to recall the earlier dvdshrink versions cannot remove or don't touch the original layer break at all.

No. It never does. It rips in file mode and rebuilds the .iso. You won't get a true 1:1 backup with Shrink. You can get pretty close (minus some protection) to a 1:1 backup with Clonecd and Anydvd.

This is certainly not my experience as I have been using DVD Shrink long before it introduced the 'remove layer break' option and eventually stopped development. I used to manually remove the "original layer break" manually using IFOEdit to the DVDShrinked files. Anyway, I don't think this is the right place to discuss DVDShrink feature in a CloneDVD forum. Cheers.

Does Nero Recode do a true 1:1 copy? I use Clone DVD for almost all of my back-ups due to the ability to shed most of the special features/previews and keep the menus (which rocks), and rarely use any of my Nero applications (mainly due to how much I like Clone DVD), but I was wondering if I should really shell out ~$60 bucks for Clone CD just to get my DVD+DLs to get the correct layer break and start working (add 3:10 to Yuma to list). I've only burned King Aurthur and 3:10 so far w/3:10 being the only problem, but obviously I dont want to have to keep throwing away DLs (they're expensive, or at least relatively). Also, any time line from Elby on the new release of Clone DVD? I honestly don't think it makes sense to have to buy two different programs just to get the job done(one to burn DVD+R another for DVD+R DL?) I know others share my frustration on this and I also know this is an Elby issue, but just wanted to put this out there. Thanks and keep up the good work! (AnyDVD HD has to be the best software I've ever used. I passed up buying a Mac b/c AnyDVD HD is not Mac compatible  ... this was before bootcamp)

Ok, sorry, just read about Recode, sorry, but the question on buying Clone CD and Clone DVD time line still stands.
