How to extract subtitles from blu-ray

Does anyone have any tips for extracting subtitles from a blu-ray disc? I tried used eac3to. I first selected the main movie. I then selected 2 different audio tracks. After selecting the english track I tried to save both files off to .sub files. I tried to open these .sub files in SubtitleCreator but no luck.

I am trying to get the subtitles in the form of .idx/.sub for xbmc.

you need something like subrip (there are 2 or 3 other - but the names escape me just now), but it's a thankless task. i tend to download them from opensubs in srt format.

Well I would like to rip the subtitles and put them into the idx/sub files for use with XBMC because this format gives me the ability to display FORCED subtitles only. Is there any other way i can display forced subtitles only in an mkv container?

I want to rip blu-ray to hard drive as an iso, and burn to a BD25 in movie-only mode with forced subtitles to play automatically. Does anyone know how I can do this? Is there another way besides multiavchd? That program seems to take FOREVER to transcode (like 10 hours for the movie 2012)

Thats easy. All you need is BD-Rebuilder at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143716

it requires a couple additional tools (all linked to in the first post of that thread), but the stuff it can do is amazing. BDRB (what bd-rebuilder is often referred to in short), can compress a FULL SIZED 43.5GB BD50 to a 23.3GB BD25 disc without ANY VISUAL QUALITY LOSS. The process is similar to cloneDVD. Set it up to your liking, then it removes all unwanted audio & subtitle streams and rebuilds the disc to single layer format.

It can even make movie-only backups to BD5/9's and output to a couple mobile formats. Simply put an amazing FREE tool, till slysoft comes out with their own tool (wich they are working on)

Thanks. I didn't realize bd rebuilder could include forced subtitles. Apparently, in "settings", if you choose English (eng) as your ONLY subtitle and UNCHECK "keep only one subtitle for each language" it will play the forced subs. This has worked with 2012 and Avatar so far. You are right: BD Rebuilder is amazing!

You can use hdbrstreamextractor for extracting bluray subtitle and BDSup2Sub to export idx/sub. All it take is a few minutes. It is also good at extracting chapter info and put into mkv.
