I encountered this problem when 5.3.1.4 when it was released, but I was upgrading my computer with 2 new Western Digital Caviar 500 GB Hard drives and I forgot about it until I went to make a copy of The Spirit, a newly released movie. When Reading a Disc, Clone CD reports a “Read error while writing the file”. I uninstalled 5.3.1.4 and rebooted and installed 5.3.1.1 rebooted, and then used it to make a successful copy. I used Spiderman 2 widescreen special edition movie to reproduce the error. I had AnyDVD 6-5-8-7 installed and running. My computer has a dual boot with Win 98SE and Win XP Home Edition with SP3. Here is the XP Clone CD log file:

Clone CD version 5.3.1.3 works great in both operating systems. I am using a Dell Optiplex GX260; it has an Intel chipset, a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz processor, and 1 GB of Ram. (I would use 2 GBs if someone would write a solution to Win98se's limitation of not being able to recognize more them 1.5 GB of RAM). I have the Intel Application Accelerator for Large hard drives from Dell Support. My hard drives use the FAT 32 file system. My DVD Drive is an LG and Device Manager reports it as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B. I love Slysoft's products and I am an owner of Clone CD 4, which I purchased in June, 2001. I have used Clone CD successfully over 500 times.

Thank you

. When Reading a Disc, Clone CD reports a “Read error while writing the file”. I uninstalled 5.3.1.4 and rebooted and installed 5.3.1.1 rebooted

The discs may be borderline defective, and the difference ocurring in Clonecd versions would be merely coincidental then, unless the problem occurs for you with all discs.

1. Use Anydvd 6.5.9.4 beta: click http://sandbox.slysoft.com/beta/SetupAnyDVD6594.exe
(If you don't own Anydvd, you can try the program for free for 21 days.)

You may need to reboot after installing if prompted to do so.

2. Click the red fox icon on your toolbar. Click "default". Click "ok".

3. Post an Anydvd .zip log file

i) Ensure Anydvd is running.
ii) Put the problematic original movie dvd in your optical drive. Wait for Anydvd to scan the disc.
iii) Right click the red fox icon on your toolbar.
iv) Select "Create Logfile"
v) Wait for Anydvd to create a log file.
vi) A pop-up screen will appear. Take note of the location where Anydvd created the logfile and the logfile's name. Click "ok".
vii) Windows Explorer will open, and you will see a zip file called "Anydvd_Info_titleofmydisc.zip" (or something similar; see step f)
viii) When replying or posting in the Slysoft forums, look for the icon that looks like
attach.gif
(in other words, look for the paperclip after clicking "quote" or when creating a new thread)
ix) If you don't see that paperclip icon, click the "go advanced" button. You should see that icon now. Click the paperclip.
x) A small pop-up screen should appear (if it doesn't please ensure your browser is enabled to allow pop-ups from the Slysoft forums)
xi) Click the "Browse" button, and locate and select the .zip file you created.
xii) click "upload"
xii) Close the window. When you submit reply, or submit a new thread, the .zip file will be attached automatically for us to take a look at

4. Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. With Anydvd running in the background, select the tab labelled "scandisc". Select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your disc is (probably) bad and needs to be exchanged--even if it plays fine (or your optical drive could be slowly dying).

AnyDVD Log

Sorry I only had time to make the log file in XP sp3, I will post the 98SE log later.

In Win XP mode, I uninstalled AnyDVD 6-5-8-7, rebooted, installed AnyDVD -5-9-4, rebooted. With only AnyDVD running, I put in the same DVD as before. I followed your instructions and attached the zip file. I ran Nero CD-DVD Speed. Here is the report:

Just a brief comment ...you should instruct people to over write the last to digits of the Imanpi and Redbook File version so they don't post them like I did.

There is no firmware upgrade from LG for my 3 year old writer.

I don't believe that this is a AnyDVD problem. I think this is a Clone CD 5.3.1.4 problem. The reason why I believe this is because when I uninstall CloneCD 5.3.1.4, and install CloneCD 5.3.1.3. I don't have any problems. In fact, I can't copy any DVDs with using Clone CD 5.3.1.4 (I haven't tried CDs or anything else) and always get the same error. I'll use my experience with Transformers 2 as an example. Clone CD copies and appears like it is going to finish with 100% read and then the error window pops up, and it fails. I unistall it, reboot, installed Clone CD 5.3.1.3, rebooted and used AnyDVD 6.5.9.5. The Clone CD log reports Failed to read sector *****. Anytime I have had a problem with AnyDVD I always get the Failed to read sector error. My experience has taught me that if you get that error, that either the disc is dirty/scratched and needs to be repaired (Always the case when it is an older DVD), or I need to download the newest version of AnyDVD (Always the case when it is a new release). I go to the slysoft website, see there was no update, and then enter the forum. I find the entry about this movie in the AnyDVD Section, and download and install AnyDVD 6.5.9.6 Beta. Reboot and start CloneCD 5.3.1.3. Copies fine, in fact I have made many copies of different DVDs without any problems. That is why I believe the problem is with Clone CD 5.3.1.4.

I just wanted to add one more thing, I don't believe there was a conflict with the Ide Busmaster Drivers. After I removed the Intel drivers, my computer takes twice as long to boot.

No. You haven't removed them. And they are known to cause conflicts with Slysoft programs. Olli is the original author of Clonecd. If he's telling you to do something, it's time to pay attention.

It's not. That's why we're in the Clonecd forum, and I haven't moved your thread.

No. Doing so in pointless; there's no identifying information there. Also, there's no reason to post that information at all if you're providing Anydvd logs.

E 1:00:34 PM Error while writing file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\IMAGE.dvd!

The problem is that this isn't a very descriptive message. It's an error that's created when producing the temporary/cached image to your hard drive--before burning.

How much free space do you have on drive "C:"?

Tried it, didn't work

My appologies, I should have stayed with this thread back in Oct. I just didn't have the time and like I said before, the previous version of clone cd worked fine. Your right, the Conflicting Driver IdeChnDr IDE Busmaster Drivers are still installed. After reading your response, I followed your instructions and replaced the driver with the standard driver, Rebooted and the XP version of scan disc started. After it was done, XP loaded up fine until it got to my volume on my taskbar...the computer was just hanging and the read light to my hard drive was light the whole time. I waited 10 minutes and restarted the computer but it just would hang and not finish booting completely. I used system restoreto roll back the changes. XP loaded up but when I tried to access my volume control I got an error saying "unable to load needed components. Please reinstall application. I did and everything was fine. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Zs Platinum sound card and the volume control that was hangin my computer is part of Creative's Mediasource software. While doing this, I remember that I went through all this back in Oct. I had just forgotten about it and that's why I thought that driver was uninstalled. Sorry bout that.

Drive C: is a 112gb partion of a 500gb hard drive attached to the primary IDE channel. It has 95.6 gb free. I have Win98se installed on it.

Drive D: is a unpartitioned 500gb hard drive attached to the secondary IDE channel

Drive E: is the second partion of the primary hard drive. the partion is 149 gb and has 87.8 gb free. I have WinXP installed on this drive

Hope that helps

Hmm, not really . . .

The Intel IdeChnDr doesn't need to be removed for your hard drives, but one of them should be removed for your optical drives.

Whether that's the primary ide channel or the secondary ide channel, I don't know without looking at your computer (in device manager).

Other than that, I'm out of suggestions at this point, sorry. I use Clonecd on a couple of XP systems and never encounter this issue, but I don't use Intel IDE drivers.

Thinkin out loud

My hard drives are on the primary IDE channel (master and slave), and my DVD burner is the only drive on the secondary IDE channel. You probably already know this, but the Intell IDE busmaster was installed when I used the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility Win98-XP A06 05-20-02 R41334 I got from Dell. This installs all the motherboard drivers for my computer. After you install your OS. Your suppose to install this program first. My computer is a used one from the internet. I bought a Dell/Intel model because you can still download all the drivers for it. I suppose I could do a reinstall and after I install the OS, I could then install the standard IDE Busmaster driver before I do anything else. It'll take a couple days..something I couldn't start until next monday.

Still having problems

I followed your advice and installed the microsoft driver for the secondary IDE controller. It didn't work. Clone CD reads 100% then I get a failure error. Here is the anydvd log file. I did this on FEb 17 which is why AnyDVD is an older version, current at the time though.

I had a problem with a bad installation on my C: partion that has Win98SE on it, it corrupted my boot portion of the drive so that I couldn't choose between Win98 or Win XP anymore. I had to do a reformat and reinstall of both partions. This time, running XP, I changed the IDE busmasters to the standard microsoft drivers before I installed any other software other then Windows update and Avira Antivirus. I installed Clone CD 5.3.1.4 and using AnyDVD 6.6.3.0 I tried it again. I got the same error. Clone CD copies 100% and then reports a failure error. Here is the AnyDVD log file.

I also bought a used Dell GX270 and did a fresh installation, and after windows update and antivirus installs, I updated the IDE driver to the standard microsoft driver. Clone CD 5.3.1.4 works great on that computer. The only thing I can think of is that there is some difference in the 2 computers that is causing the problem. The Dell GX260, the one which has the problem with Clone CD 5.3.1.4, uses the FAT32 file system. The primary hard drive is 500GB and the first partion is 120 GB with Win98SE installed. The second partion is 160GB with WinXP sp3 installed. The third partion is 204GB used for Data. The Dell GX270 uses the NTFS file system. The primary drive is 500GB and the first partion is 160GB with WinXP sp3 installed. The second partion is 316GB and is used for Data. Other then the file system, there isn't that much difference between the two in hardware. Both are Pentium 4's, 2.4Ghz with a 533 front side bus and 2.86Ghz with a 800 front side bus. One has 1GB ram and the other 2.5GB ram.

I am wondering is the FAT32 fie system's limit on 4GB file size the problem or something else. I reverted back to Clone CD 5.3.1.3 on that computer and sucessfully copied the movie...but would like to resolve this problem so that I may use the current version of Clone CD and future updates. Any ideas would be appreciated

I just thought of one other difference

I realized that there is one other difference between My GX260, the one that the newest version of Clone CD doesn't work on, and my GX270, the one that the newest verion does work on. The GX270 has a Primary and Secondary IDE Channels. The motherboard also has 2 SATA connections allowing it to have either 2 IDE drives or 2 SATA Drives. I am not sure if that is why Clone CD works on one and but not the other.

I believe so. Newest CloneCD will not split the output to 1GB files anymore, so a DVD will usually require files >4GB.

Feedback from a customer

If that is the case, then Slysoft should do one of 3 things:

1. Update Clone CD to be able to detect which Hard Drive File system is being used and adjust the file splitting to either 1G to 4G or 4G and above

or

2. Change the system requirements on your Clone CD Product page to reflect that it no longer works with Fat 32 file system

or

3. Make the prior version available to paid customers.

Slysoft's Clone CD System Requirements:

IBM-compatible personal computer with a minimum 500 MHz Pentium-class microprocessor and 64 MB RAM

Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit)

1 MB hard-disk space

Obviously it's not going to work with Win 98 because of the Fat 32 File system. I know personally that it does work on a 500 Mhz Celeron, made many DVDs with that computer. At least the pervious version did because that computer had Win 98SE. I am betting that every person who sucessfully used Clone CD prior to the 5.3.1.4 update, and has posted or visited this forum looking for some support, is using the Fat 32 file system on their hard drive. In fact someone posted here asking for the prior version and was told that Slysoft doesn't make prior versions available. I contacted Slysoft Support about the problem I have had and their response was:

"Thank you for your e-mail.

CloneDVD is our movie copy program, not CloneCD."

I won't name the support person here. There is a problem that Slysoft needs to address. Everyone who has a computer that uses the Fat 32 system is screwed if they updated to Clone CD 5.3.1.4 and don't have a copy of version 5.3.1.3 or earlier to revert back to.

Good idea. I'll look into it.

Anyone can download previous versions of SlySoft's CloneCD (5.3.1.3 - 5.2.6.1) from the FileHippo archive page:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_clonecd/

Technical details and change logs about each version are available to view.
