Using a Vista PC with an Intel D975XBX2 motherboard I could not get the Sigmatel digital audio output to work using the default configuration.
In order to do so, I had to go to 'Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Manage audio devices' then right click on 'Speakers' and select 'Disable'.
You can also right click and select 'Show Disabled Devices' if you need to reenable 'Speakers'.
