CloneCD probs backing up a game

I have tried twice. Once on the laptop and now on my desktop. Don't have any of those Roxio progs installed that were listed, nor sdtp.

Using the latest version of CloneCD.

2 gigs ram on laptop 4 on desktop.

I put disk 2, safedisc protected disk of Pool of Radiance (PC game) ruins of Myth Drannor in.

I selected read and save as image. It did all that, and then I burned using CloneCD and disk supposedly burned fine.

I installed the game and it installed fine from BOTH disks. Then to run it and play it, it required disk 2 to be in the drive. I put it in the drive and get the error "please eject the disk and reinsert and restart program".

It did this on both tries with the laptop and desktop.

I am using trial version of this and a couple other trying to decide which to purchase. I thought this was it but I am not sure now. Can someone help? I just want something to backup all my games as an image, and burn to cd/dvd(will try clone dvd for the dvd games if I can get clonecd to work), so I can play from those copies and store my masters away.

I am at a loss on this and would appreciate help. I save 2 log files, and pasted below. 1 is my log from the read session, and 2 is the one from the burn session. I would also note that I am at his moment on my 2nd destop trying this again a 2nd time on it. this time tho in the read log file it is listing the weak sectors where in the below try, it did not list them in the read file, but did in the burn log. Help would be appreciated.

This software was tops at review sites and would like to get it to work and do what I need it to so I can move on to the dvd software. Thanks...t

Do you have CloneCD Tray running? Did you try the "Hide CDR Media" option?

Do you have CloneCD Tray running? Did you try the "Hide CDR Media" option?

Thanks for your response...No to both questions. I just opened CloneCD from the start>programs menu and went from there. I saw the cdtray but did not have it running nor the Hide CDR Media. I have done that now and doing another run.

Can you tell me or point me to where the purpose of the cdtray and hide cdr media option is explained...so I can understand what is going on and what each does?

I did on the laptop yesterday have anydvd running in the background because I thought it was needed to do the copy protection, but not on today's run.

I really wnat this to work and I do appreciate all the help. I have read thru the brief instructions in the program but missed the tray and hide option. Thanks so much and will post back on the results...thanks...tim

Open the Help file then click on the Tray Icon from the left menu. It explains their functions. The short version is: The CloneCD Tray Icon runs so you can look at options and run the Hide CDR Media option. The Hide CDR Media option is used on programs that can "tell" that you are not using the original disc to emulate the original.

that makes sense...thanks for the explanation. I will definitely look in the help file as soon as this run is done. this takes about 3 hours to to a read to img on this cd...not sure why but it does, so as soon as done will look those things up in the help file. Thanks so much, I will definitely report back on how this run goes when it completes using those settings....tim

Report on latest run..with CD Tray running and hide cdr Same thing...when loading game, it tells me to eject the disk and re insert it and restart the game...so still not working...thanks..t

When you created your backup game cd did you have the hide cdr checked or unchecked? If you didn't that is why your getting that message. I done it to some of my cd games and they installed and played as the originals. Having it checked after you backup the game is fruitless as the protection will recognize it as a backup and refuse to work. The reason I am asking is to be sure you checked it correctly. Also you want to change your burn speed to half the rated media speed as well.

Pool of Radiance (PC game) ruins of Myth Drannor.

That is a awfully old game - I think if you correctly set the hide cdr settings you should be able to backup that game correctly. I done it with NWN 2 and the two subsequent addon packs without no problems.

Thanks Recycle..yes it is old, most of mine are..that is why i want to back them up, as some you can't get anymore.

On the hide cdr. I did have it checked during the read, and then during the burn session. I checked it while it was reading the cd to the img file and then also checked when burning to blank cd.

Is that correct or should it be checked during one session and not the other? thanks..t

I read the help section as MM above suggested and now am unclear on something.

The hide cdr...do I check it for both the read and burn sessions as I did?

And do i have to have clonecd tray running when I play the game and have hide cdr checked then too?

Because I am burning it on one computer where I have the program installed and trying to run the game on a diff computer to check it, that does not have clonecd on it..so do I need to have hide cdr checked and installed on computer the game is to be played on? If so is there any other way to back it up so that clonecd does not have to run in the background? thanks...tim

Well I answered my question above, I installed clonecd on my computer with the game and checked the hide cdr. I got no error message, the game started to load to full dark screen and then the game crashed and ended. Any ideas on this? At least made progress to get past that first prob...thanks..t

Good news...It worked and I will be purchasing it tomorrow ..late here.

I installed it on my other desktop and ran the cdtray and checked the cdr hide as the 2 posters above suggested and it ran fine...must be something on my other computer that did not like it after I learned to run the hide cdr on it...got rid of the error but kept crashing. My goal is to back up all these old games and then dual boot one computer and have the 2nd boot, just for games..so this worked and am pleased..thanks MM and Recycle.

Some questions from this experience tho if I may

When do I want to run the hide cdr when making the backup...during read process or the burn process or both? or will it hurt to keep it on all the time or does it matter..is the hide cdr just for playing the game or does it do something during the creation process?

Second, is there anyway to make a backup img and then backup cd that will work without the cdtray and hide cdr running in the systray?

Again many thanks..tim

Hey Recycle. Thanks and I would be interested in how, if anything different you might have done on Neverwinter nights 2 as that is one that I have to do too. thanks again..t

To be able to make a cd game backup you have to have hide cdr checked cause the game cd will check to see if the cd game is the original and with hide cdr check it will see it as original cd game and run it as original game cd not realizing that your using the backup. I think that is protection that is check to make it is the master cd not a backup cd. But here a better explanation of hide-cdr from Slysoft.
http://www.slysoft.com/en/what-is-hide-cdr-faq.20.520.html
After reading this link I thought why not try it on one of my harder games that I couldn't backup. And what would you imagine it worked it fooled the NWN2 and add-on disk as original and they worked and play just fine even with updates. Give that a try and tell me how it goes but I do know for sure my backup works just like originals game cd without problem. Something which from now on if I can do I will do that with any future games to protect my investment.

Thanks Recycle, that will be my next game and will update you on how it goes. I wanted to get 2 programs for backing these up in case one does not work, hopefully the other will ...So am buying Sllysoft and Alcohol. I have been trying both out with this game and got both to work so can now buy both. Prob overkill but these are the 2 toprated progs and I am very pleased with both, especially slysoft and the support from slysoft and you guys.

So will do NWN 2 next but going to buy this first, in a few minutes. thanks so much...I learned a lot from both of you...I did not realize that these programs had to run with that cdr hide or other option checked but it makes sense. Thank you very much and I am sure I will return for more help and hope as I learn I can in return offer other newbs some sort of aid as you guys have done..thanks again...t

You need to have the "Hide CDR" on when trying to play the game. Leaving it on all the time shouldn't hurt.

Not to my knowledge IF the game is looking for the original. Some games don't care and it isn't necessary. You might try Game Jackal. With it you don't even need the CD. It fools the game into thinking the CD is running when it's actually playing from the HDD. Game plays faster also. Might try the 30 day trial and see how it works with your games.

Thanks so much that did the trick and I appreciate all the help. I went ahead and bought the game jackal with the others. haven't tried it but should work fine. biggest thing is to back up the masters and once that is done then can play from disk or game jackal...thanks so much..t

So am buying Sllysoft and Alcohol.

I would avoid those two running those two program at the same time there been people who had problems with Alcohol causing copy problems with slysoft software. So stick with Slysoft for now is what I recommend.

Well for NWN2 and addons it requires the original to start the check but not for running the game that is what is installed on the HDD. I know I play the game. All it does is some kinda check for original cd and allows you to play the game the game isn't played from the cd but from the HDD where it is installed.
