Is there any way to tell before the rip if AVI scanner should be used? If the original DVD plays well on the computer, does that mean that the rip will play back correctly. Also is there any way to tell by the "status" if the AVI scanner should be used? If not is there any way AnyDvd could be adjusted so that the scan could make that recommendation in the status section?

It is recommended that it be on by default under the default settings.

First, it's an AI scanner(artificial intelligence). :) And yea, James has told us to leave it set to default. If a structural protection like RipGuard or ARccOS is found, the AI Scanner will kick in and automagically fix the structure on the fly. If no structural protection is found, the AI Scanner won't touch the disc at all. So, just leave it at default.
