Trying to avoid AnyDVD - Hardware problem

My burner (not installed in the pillar) is probably on its last legs, and I intend to buy a replacement. I seem to recall that one or more burning-hardware items can't deal with the Region problem even with AnyDVD on the computer. Could I ask which hardware should be avoided?
