I followed the instructions to backup "The Holiday" using clonedvd2 but even after that, "The Holiday is 5GB large. Even if I reauthor to just the main movie it is still too large....

Any one have ANY suggestions?

You mean Shrink is unable to compress the main movie after importing Clonedvd2's rip? Do you get an error message? If so, what is it?

If you just want the main movie, do this:
Right click on Anydvd on the toolbar, and select "rip-video dvd to harddisk". After you're finished ripping you should be able to import the main movie only into Shrink (Click "reauthor" and then browse to the location of the video_ts folder. Then drag and drop the main movie over to the left).

Re-Author Holiday

So does that mean I cannot have the menus and the extras but only the main movie?

If you use this method, then yes:
Right click on Anydvd on the toolbar, and select "rip-video dvd to harddisk". After you're finished ripping you should be able to import the main movie only into Shrink (Click "reauthor" and then browse to the location of the video_ts folder. Then drag and drop the main movie over to the left).

In theory, though, you should be able to rip with Clonedvd and import that rip into Shrink. You still haven't mentioned if Shrink was unable to compress the rip or what error message, if any, you received.

That said, you can do a full disc backup using Clonedvd/Anydvd or Anydvd/Clonecd or Anydvd and a number of other burning/transcoding apps that are listed in the sticky concerning shrink at the top of the forums.

If you are in dire need of using Shrink, then there are freeware decrypters that will work. Feel free to ask your question in the third party app forum, and I guarantee people will answer.

DVDFab

Im sure DVDFab would work but I do not have that I have AnyDVD, DVDClone2 Shrink, and Nero.
Following the instructions given I was able to backup just the movie and the interviews but I know I lost the menus, but I guess the movie is the most important.

*sigh*

dvdfabdecrypter is freeware as is RI4Me

but I do not have that I have AnyDVD, DVDClone2

These two programs will do a full disc backup, and you can use Clonedvd to split the film across two single layer discs and retain the menus as well (which is something Shrink can't do), if you want absolutely no compression.

I just finished backing up The Holiday using ANYDVD and CloneDVD2 to rip the files to the hard drive and then used DVDShrink to compress. I had to run the files through FixVTS first as the initial analysis in Shrink showed the files being way over 5 GB. After using FixVTS version 1.603 the output worked fine in Shrink.

Interesting. Thanks for the info

There was a lot of remapping done for both Casino Royale and The Holiday when running the VOBs through FixVTS. Not surprising since they both had the same b***s*** Sony protection and 99 VTS files.
If you still have the log could you post the FixVTS log for me please? I am curious.

Right click on the tool bar of FixVTS and click on "Open LOG". Thanks!

I agree Joe's post was misleading. But then I think of how many transcoder threads *intent* that Webslinger has derailed with the "old Procoder shuffle" and I kinda chuckled at it all. :D

I apologize for not making myself more clear by leaving out some important information. That information was posted in post #6.
I'll leave this alone so I don't "waste" anymore of Webslinger's valuable time.

actually #5, but none the less... The original poster clearly was asking about getting this done with DVD shrink...
:agree:

I'm pretty tired of the "mine's bigger than yours posts".
If there were only one method to create a backup, rest assured, none of us would be making many backups.
It seems at times, we are playing into the hands of the forces that are against us, by fighting amonst ourselves.
If it takes a combination of proggies to make a backup, so be it.
However......... if we don't unite, we may as well start buying an extra copy when we purchace a DVD, because that is the only backup we will ever get.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
Anyone else?

I have the log for The Holiday but it is way too large to post here in it's entirety.

It took eight minutes for FixVTS to complete it's work, and, like mahoney19, I was able to use a third-party program (Nero Recode 2) to resize the movie for a single layer disc.

Nero 2 wouldn't work on The Holiday before I used FixVTS.

Sorry, I don't have the log for it anymore. I have backed up a few other movies since Casino Royale. I'm not sure if the log file overwrites an old one or appends the new info to it but I regularly clear my temp dirs.

Maybe someone else has a log file for it... hopefully. I'd actually like to see it myself w/o having to re-rip it just to see the log.

<snip>

Yeah, it took awhile for The Holiday. Both needed a lot of remapping but Casino Royale was more work.

Note: You can't upload it as a compressed attachment? Zip, 7-Zip or Rar it before attaching. I'd be interested in seeing it, myself.
