[Resolved] Why do I get such miserable burning speeds?

I've got three external burners, including a brand new LG. They are rated at 16x, 16x, and 20x (the newest). I use YUDEN blanks. Each burner has all up-to-date firmware. It doesn't matter what burning software I use: ImgBurn, DVDdecrypter, or Sonic Digital media. I rarely get above 2.4x on my burning speeds, and about 5.3x on verifying the disc. Ages ago, when I was new to this, I would routinely get 13x out of a burner --- the same burners used now, unless I use the new one, which is the slowest of them all.

What can I do to get the promised 16x, 16x, 20x, or at least something approaching the discs' maximum rated speed? This is very frustrating!

Thanks for any help!

I use YUDEN blanks.

a) What speed are they rated at?

b) Upload an Anydvd .zip log file using one of these burners

c) If these LG drive are using an IDE interface, ensure that source and destination devices are not sharing the same cable.

d) Is DMA enabled for your drives in
i) Windows XP?
ii) Windows Vista?
iii) general?

e) Is the original source disc bad? If so, the reading process will take longer.
Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your disc is bad and needs to be exchanged--even if it plays fine (or your optical drive could be slowly dying).

f) Did you select an appropriate burn speed? Obviously 4x is going to take longer than 12x.

g) Try another cable on the back of your burner (ensure that you are using an 80 wire cable if you have an ide burner). Maybe your existing cable has gone bad.

e) Try defragmenting your hard drive.

f) Ensure speed control is unchecked in Anydvd (or at least, ensure "Slow and Quiet" is not enabled).

g) Click this to see what TBPirate did to resolve his problem.

h) PDFhook and Windows search/indexing can cause problems: click this to see what lostinlodos did to resolve his problem

and about 5.3x on verifying the disc.

1) Do you have Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% installed? SPTD is one culprit for slow rips:
http://forum.slysoft.com/showpost.php?p=124439&postcount=5

2) Some LG drives do have Riplock: click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rirl]

Here you go:

a. 8x but it also happens with Memorex 16x

b. I think I attached a zip file.

c. I don't think so.

d. Yes, enabled for Windows XP

e. This has been going on for well over a year and many of the discs have scadisced just fine.

f. I select maximum.

g. Each burner has a separate cable --- they are devices F, K, and L, and I used a new cable with the new LG burner.

e. I defragment twice a week like clockwork.

f. Yes, unchecked.

g. No files in PRINTER

h. I did this and will see what happens...

i. My newest device isn't listed in the riplock list

O.k., so all your burners are external USB burners?

Have you tried visiting your motherboard's website and looking for new chipset drivers (and new drivers in general)?

Windows XP (32-bit) Service Pack 2

Have you tried updating to Service Pack 3?

Sorry, I don't know what to else to suggest. I really am not fond of usb drives.

Yes, all external USB

except for a CD drive that doesn't burn DVDs.

SP3 has a bad rep with some vital programs to my setup and in any case it doesn't explain where my 13x results have gone in my SP2 configuration.

I tried a new try with the change suggested in the riplock link --- after holding the tray open button for 3+ seconds while empty. The disc burned for a few seconds early on at 4x but dropped back to 2.7 for the next ten minutes. I canceled the burn at that point, as I didn't really want a copy of the disc.

I thought the problems originated when I first got my second burner (a Memorex RAM 510L device) but removing it from the system didn't seem to help any. Maybe I should have rebooted...???

Can I use AnyDVD and the speed setting to force Loud and Noisy to increase speeds?

Thanks again for your efforts.

Riplock just affects reading--not writing.

That should only affect reading/playback.

Sorry, I'm not sure.

Maybe someone else will have some suggestions for these USB drives.

Have you installed any other USB devices that may have changed the standard USB drivers (Belkin and Iomega were notorious for this)

I'm not sure ---

I have only two other USB devices attached: A Canon Printer --- maybe I could yank that out and see if it helps?

The other one I've had all along --- a reader for floppy discs as Drive A. That is easy to unplug and I rarely use it anyway...

I once had Nero software but found it annoying, so I deleted it...could something useful have been deleted with it, do you think?

Thanks for the help!

I select maximum.

USB 2.0, Hi Speed USB FAQ

Try setting for a Slower Burn speed
You results might actually be faster
First try at 4x ... and then if all goes well move up to 8x ... then 12x

Most USB drives
- depending on the drive , enclosure chip-set used and your Computer config
- don't do well above 8x/12x

I'm sure that there are exceptions
.. but .... in most cases , that I've seen around the Forums
Trying to Burn much faster than 8x with an USB Drive
- will induce a Bad Burn ... if not Burn failure

Here's the Usual .....troubleshoots ...
Let's check something .....

Go to > Start > My Computer
> Right Click on DVD drive > Properties > Auto-Play tab

What do you have selected for the "Action to Perform" for 'DVD Movie" ?
This should be set as "Take no action"

What do you have selected for the "Action to Perform" for 'Blank CD" ?
This should be set as "Take no action"

Another way To test the 'Blank CD" AutoPlay handler
> exit All DVD/CD programs
> Insert a blank DVD/CD Media into your Drive
and let the Drive recognize the blank
Are you presented with a Prompt ?
- or Does a Program automatically open ?

If nothing happens - Good , that's what you want .
If you are Prompted to select a program
Select 'Take No Action"
Check 'always use this action'
Click OK

Tell me If a / which -Program automatically opens

`````````````````
Go to > Start > My Computer
> Right Click on DVD drive > Properties
Here in the DVD Drive 'Properties"
Do you have a "DLA" tab ?
= Disable DLA
Let's look at your Filters
> Download IMGBurn. It's a free program:
(it's also an excellent burning program )
> Run IMGBurn > Go to Tools > Filter Driver Load Order
> Click "Clipboard". Close IMGBurn
Then paste the information you copied into your clipboard
into your next post in this thread (ctrl-v).
Here's some Help - with maybe ... reducing your Computer's load ....
I'd recommend that you Try using EnditALL while Copying/Burning
... to free up your resources
... You might be surprised at what's running - in the background
and /also -
Open Advanced SystemCare Free > Utilities > Admin Tools > Start-Up Manager
( it's completely free and a very recommended clean-up program )
You will be presented with a listing of the Programs
- Programs that are designated to Start-Up with Windows
- and Descriptions of Each ( Click on Selection )
Any Start Up Entry - Referring to any DVD/CD Software ?
Windows Media Player (wmpnscfg) ?
ITunes ?
Musicmatch ?
If So = UN Check it
This only Disables the Program - from the List
- Designated to 'Start-Up' - with Windows
You would - still - be able to 'manually' start the Program(s) - when needed
Also ......
UN Check anything - Not Trustworthy
UN Check anything - Not Necessary or Not Preferred
( you may later click on an Start-Up item > Select Enable - If you prefer )
>> Apply
> Reboot
or -
You could also , Go into Msconfig - and Deselect unneeded Programs
- from your 'Start Up"
This will help a lot .....
Do I really need this on my PC?
How to use MSCONFIG ?
````````````

fwiw ....
An external enclosure with an eSATA connection
Is well worth the investment
You could probably easily add an eSATA card/ connection to your Laptop/ desktop
- relatively inexpensively
A eSATA connection can be just as fast as an Internal Drive
.... and mosts eSATA Enclosures additionally offer a USB option - as well

Thanks --- lots of stuff here

It'll take me a day or two to work through it all, but I can comment on a few things: All my devices are already set for "Take no Action" and nothing happens when I insert a disc. There is no DLA tab on any of their properties. There are two A/V items in startup: AnyDVD and Remote Selector, which I've had all along. I exit both of them when breaking in a new burner to set the Region Code properly.

I should have listed AnyDVD as an exception
It's recommend to have AnyDVD start-up with Windows

I'm not sure what the Purpose of having Remote Selector is (?)
AnyDVD already provides these abilities for you
It seems a little redundant using both Programs
I would definitely recommend ~at least~ Disabling Remote Selector from Windows Start-up
No sense having two programs running - trying to accomplish the same thing (?)

;)

Here's the filter stuff:

Here's the filter list as an attachment. It's pretty skimpy, I suspect.

I keep my startup list pretty lean, but will stop Remote Selector from being part of it. I can't quite remember why I had it there but nothing comes to kind...

I set the burn speed in ImgBurn to 8x and speeds increased a bit, with no change when I upped to 10x.

Could you post a Log of a 8x burn ?
( I can read ImgBurn logs ;) )

10x isn't usually an 'Available' Media/Burner Write strategy - for SL Media
10x is only used by specific DL Media

4x , 8x ... maybe 12x - are your best bet

for reference ... here's a 12x burn IMGBurn :

Remote Selector is a beyond Antique attempt of a 'Decrypter'
Remote Selector is an add-on utility for PC DVD players
with the following features:
Region free, Disabling User Prohibition, Disabling of forced subtitles.
NO longer developed
Last update : Aug 12, 2004
http://www.remoteselector.com/documentation.htm

I'd say that makes it pretty much useless
- especially since you have AnyDVD
I would recommend just Removing Remote Selector
from your ADD/Remove programs

.... For the most part ...

Your Filters are fine / normal
- nothing to warrant any real concern about conflicting Software
( that I can see )

OK, here's what I've done...

I upped the speed selection to 12x...nothing set to burn at the moment, though.

I've taken Remote Selector out of startup, but in the back of my mind, I may one day take advantage of one feature that I don't think AnyDVD works with: removing macroguard from VHS input...correct me if I'm wrong?

Thanks again for all your help. We can hope that things will go more quickly now!

What's VHS ? :D

I wouldn't know ...
Any VHS tapes I had - I've replaced with the actual DVD
there is just no comparison in the quality

I would think Disabling from start-up should be sufficient

:)

I hope to have something to burn soon...

I'll use ImgBurn and try to get the logs for you.

Here's my LogFile, as promised

Hope this helps!

Thanks again for your help and interest.

I 19:25:00 Total Physical Memory: 227,816 KB - Available: 57,056 KB
I 19:25:31 Filling Buffer... (20 MB)

This is your problem

IF at all possible
You desperately need to ADD some more RAM memory to your system

What Make and Model# computer are you using ?

RAM Is very inexpensive

Go here :
Scan your Computer
the Scan will tell you : What you have > against > What you could have
http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx?g...16583:dedridb6mjyaahecaxmaaaab:20080519164222
( I'm not recommending Crucial RAM necessarily ..... just using their scanner ;) )

Then .... Take the Scan Result Specs
... and Cross Reference here :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductConfigurator.aspx?category=17&name=Memory-Configurator
( Newegg has some really good Prices ;) )

Until you Add more RAM
You're better off setting to Burn at 4x
Average Write Rate: 5,954 KB/s (4.3x)Maximum Write Rate: 8,424 KB/s (6.1x)

P.S.

UN check the Verify option when Burning with ImgBurn

:)

Thanks --- food for thought

I checked out newegg but couldn't find external memories. Can I use those things with an enclosure? Do they MAKE external memories that would suit?

It's a 50 mile round trip + $75 minimum fee + 4 day wait to take it to the computer shop...not a handy approach!

I've got a Compaq Presario. I wish I didn't, kind of.
