[Resolved] What happened to speed?

I was able to RIP DVD's in 4 minutes but for the last couple weeks every time I try its taking 55 minutes on average? Nothing has changed in my setup... where should I look? I am using Taiyo Yuden DVD's 16x max. Thanks.

Check your optical drive and make sure it has not rolled back to PIO mode. The drive should be DMA if available.

13. My burns are taking forever to complete suddenly. Why?

a) Is DMA enabled for your drives in
i) Windows XP?
ii) Windows Vista?
iii) general?

b) Is the original source disc bad? If so, the reading process will take longer.
Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your disc is bad and needs to be exchanged--even if it plays fine (or your optical drive could be slowly dying).

c) Did you select an appropriate burn speed in Clonedvd? Obviously 4x is going to take longer than 12x.

d) Try another cable on the back of your burner (try an 80 wire cable if you have an ide burner). Maybe your existing cable has gone bad.

e) Try defragmenting your hard drive.

f) Ensure speed control is unchecked in Anydvd (or at least, ensure "Slow and Quiet" is not enabled).

h) Did you install a new drive--or does your drive have riplock? If so, you may simply be out of luck: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riplock

The drive is dma enabled, not only that. Right now I am running nero cd-dvd speed and can see that the disk is 16x capable but the drive is running only at 2x. So my samsung has hit the decks of dusty electronic death?

It's possible. You should try to rule out other options first, however. If this is happening with every single disc then you could try using a optical drive lens cleaner.

Just for clarification, what part of the process is where the slowdown exists? Is it in the initial ripping stage, the burning stage, or the entire process? Obviously, the ScanDisc test in Nero CD-DVD Speed only tests reading. As noted in the info that I posted a bad cable to lead to issues, as well.

It is in both, rip and write. Benchmark on Nero is not going over 2x. I will try cleaning the lens and see.

Rip speeds on DVD and Blu-Ray might be improved by MediaCodeSpeedEdit. Please see RIPLOCK.
If installed (often from Duplex Secure, Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% ), uninstall SPTD, which is the culprit for slow rips.

I took the plunge and bought a new drive, Plextor 24x SATA, running nero speed right now, it started at 10x and on it's way to 24x.

That's almost guaranteed to be a rebadged Lite-on. You're paying extra for the Plextor name.

Anyway, I'm glad things are working for you now.

Be advised that burning at max is not recommended.
