HBO Max has changed their subtitles format from ttml (xml) to vtt (WebVTT).

I have never heard of either of those formats before.

Just for your information: This isn't such a 'strange' format: WebVTT: The Web Video Text Tracks Format
or here by Mozilla.
The 'syntax' (aka format) is very close to srt.

Yes some HBO MAX titles have subtitles but many do not.
It says "No subtitles available" where subtitles should be.

In my personal opinion, it's the dumbest way to treat subtitles (because of those 2000 files, that each need to be downloaded, about 1800 are just a header with no subtitles - it just wastes traffic). Especially if you want to download multiple subtitles.

It's no big problem, but AnyStream needs changes for that.

I was looking for sites that contain subtitle files and kept getting virus warnings. I read an article saying that hackers are now putting viruses and malware in subtitle files because they are not usually scanned by security software. As an older person I really need subtitles, that really sucks that they are being used in this way.!

That's nonsense for the most part adding malicious content requires things to a degree being "exectuable" like macro's inside word documents. subtitles themselves by definition are nothing more than basic text, text by itself such as .srt files can't carry malicious content. Curious where you read that. You may just be visiting the wrong sites

Wow thanks for this technical breakdown! It seems very strange that HBO Max would breakup subtitles into thousand of files that are only seconds in duration. Sounds like a ton for work for no good reason. Maybe a software engineer working for HBO Max is doing a ton of work on subtitles to create "busy work" to justify his job/position within the company ...this sucks for all of us who want a simple 1 file subtitle download.

This is very interesting. Honestly had no idea this was a thing but I'm also not surprised. Hopefully you can find a reliable and safe location for subtitles. I've tried the built in feature in Plex but had mixed results with it. Let us know what you find.

Most of the articles I found were from 2017 so hopefully security companies and media players have fixed these problems. I am still getting virus warnings on some of these subtitle sites so I am not taking any chances.

Though it doesn't change the fact that subtitles by nature are simply text, it certainly is quite intriguing that such a method is possible. I wonder how they pull off the executable portion. I can only assume some kind of API abuse in Kodi for example to then escalated privileges.

How is this helpful? @Ch3vr0n I find that I dread seeing your responses and communication with the customers on this forum as they tend to be rude, unhelpful and not at all customer service oriented. You may not be a paid employee of RedFox but I would hope that based on your level of access and representation of them that you would show a little more professionalism. When people bring up that you are acting this way you defend yourself with comments like this and state you are not being the way that others are perceiving you. The forums are our only venue to get help and communicate with each other and RedFox about issues and share information and we all assume that it is a collaborative venue that shows respect for each other. Sure there will always be the ones who do not but we expect better from those that represent the company we choose to spend our money with.
