I've noticed the quality bar in the first 2 windows is sometimes down around 50-60%, this is due to disc damage? I just bought one of those automatic disc cleaners with the polishing cloth and it seems to work well. One dvd I had was unreadable but now it's up to 100%. I haven't played it yet but I'm hopefull.

The quality bar has nothing to do with damage. The quality bar indicates how much material needs to be compressed in order for it to fit on whatever your size your target disc is. The more compression that is required, the worse the quality bar will be.

To improve quality, remove titles that you don't need--or split the film across two single layer discs using the scissor icon. If you want to ensure 100% quality, use Verbatim +R DL blanks; I prefer to use Clonecd when using Verbatim +R DLs (but you can also use Clonedvd). Here's my preferred method for backing up movies with Clonecd: http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=327

OK, thanks very very much for the information.
I've bought Teon DVD-R 8x, they don't play. Same with Memorex DVD+RW 4x discs, same result. Bad copy, skips, etc. I've been having good results with HP DVD+RW 4x discs, good copies and no skips. I prefer to play on my fairly basic DVD player so I don't think I can use dual layer. Is that what you were referring to above with Memorex?
I did what you suggest but I omitted only subtitles and the quality rose to 100%. Great! So now I understand what that bar means. Any suggestions for basic dvd media? Favorites? I'm almost out of HP media so I'll be shopping soon. Thanks in advance.

1. Update your burner's firmware

2. Use good quality media

Same with Memorex DVD+RW 4x discs, same result. Bad copy, skips, etc.

Ensure the booktype is set to "dvd-rom", if possible:

The original commercial discs are dual layer.

You mentioned Memorex first; I didn't. So I don't know what you're referring to.

Any suggestions for basic dvd media?

Thanks for the tips and all the help.
I upgraded my firmware and it's helped tremendously with the last two dvd's I duplicated. I own two licenses (one for each computer) of all AnyDVD, Clone CD and Clone DVD2.
I'll look into your recommended dvd media. I'm still a little fuzzy about the plus r and minus r and r versus rw stuff.
Are you saying the commercial dvd's are dual layer right off th shelf or out of Blockbuster or Netflix? I didn't know that.
Interesting....
Thanks again.

Yes... MOST commercial DVD's are Duel Layer.

Without getting into details:

Do not make a DVD backup that you wish to keep on a DVD RW disc. You're wasting money by doing this. It's rewriteable but if you never plan on rewriting why waste the cash on it?

I'd recommend DVD+R over DVD-R. I think that's more of a personal decision but I'd never buy DVD minus blanks.

Not all discs you buy or rent will be dual layer. It all depends on how long the movie is and what they added to the disc. I've bought some recent movies that w/o any extras had to be on a DL disc because of the length of the movie. Other movies I've gotten are fine if I back them up and just remove the couple billion previews and other stupid non-related stuff then they fit on a single layer DVD [without compression] even though the original was a dual layer. It all depends on the movie and what they decide to add.

Humourously enough I ran across 2 movies released in 2006 that I purchased. Unheard of titles that never were in theaters but interesting enough. Anyway, they were both single layer with no CSS and they were locked to regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8. At first I wondered if AnyDVD was working right when I read the status window.
