I posted my experience using Circle (based in Boston, MA) for bitcoin here. They have backing from Goldman and Barclays among others and seem pretty legit. You can purchase the exact amount of bitcoin you need and there are no fees but they do make their own exchange and their rate is slightly higher than some others. The process of setting up an account and linking to it were pretty minimal. Overall not too bad an experience and they didn't seem shady either. You might find this a good option in spite of your hesitation in using bitcoin after reading my experience. I did save a few dollars also.
