Not all DVDs play

Ok. I have it selected.

Insert the blank media in your burner. Click "Extra", then "Bitsetting". Make the change from "dvd +R DL" to "dvd-rom" in the drop-down box. If you can choose it select "set as default". Click "set" to the right.

It may be grey where it says "disc settings". However, you should still have information about the current disc's booktype, provided you have your burner selected with blank media in it, under the "booktype" column. Presumably, if you haven't burned anything, it says "dvd+r dl"

I changed the DVD+R and DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM. Now the book type says DVD-ROM. What's next?

I did all that. Should it be good to go now?

Hope you did it with your burner selected in the drop down box area in the first screen of cd-dvdspeed.
And I hope you did it for "dvd +r dl" (the third box down under "new setting" and clicked "set" to the right).

Then you close out of cd-dvd speed and use Clonedvd.

Anyway, after you're done burning, if your backup still says

"Booktype: dvd+r dl (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)"

instead of "dvd-rom" in Anydvd's status window,
then it didn't work, and you should probably really be trying this
with Verbatim +R DL media.

I tried it, but it still didn't work. It still says the following:
Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd+r dl (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 486368 sectors (949 MBytes)
Total size: 972720 sectors (1899 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: DVD_VIDEO
Media is not CSS protected.
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is region free.

I will get some Verbatim +R DL disc and try. The Memorex ones I have are a dark purple/pink color on the bottom. Are the Verbatim ones a lighter color? Does that make a difference? I know when I have tried to play ones in the past that are the darker purple/pink, the DVD player would not read them either. Please let me know.

Wow, that's pretty disturbing. Despite the fact that Memorex +R DL isn't nearly as good as Verbatim +R DL media, it seems to me that you should be able to change the booktype on at least one of those Memorex discs.

Are the Verbatim ones a lighter color?

As I explained before the colour of the dye shouldn't have any significant bearing on playback. The reflective layer on the blank disc matters more (silver tends to have a higher reflectivity than gold, for example; but phthalocyanine dye which is typically found in gold discs is supposed to last longer, in theory, because it's more resistant to UV light and a gold reflective layer is less likely to corrode)--as does having the booktype read "dvd-rom" (for some standalone dvd players).

What is wierd to me is that 2 of the DL discs have worked. Here is what they say.

Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd+r dl[/U] [/U](version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 1897360 sectors (3705 MBytes)
Total size: 3794704 sectors (7411 MBytes)

It is the same as the others, but it actually plays, and the others don't.

Then I would simply chalk it up to junk Memorex +R DL media. Did you try a 4x write speed?

Honestly, I feel pretty safe in telling you Verbatim +R DL media (made in Singapore) is significantly better. Most people who use +R DL media know this
by now. But I am concerned that you can't change the booktype to dvd-rom.
I'm pretty puzzled by that.

I see there are quite a few Verbatim discs. Are these them?

Yeah, 4x burn speed works well on them (to be safe).

I will get some and give it a try. Thanks again for all your help.

No problem. Wish I could get bitsetting to work for you, but maybe it's the fault of the junk Memorex stuff.
I thought a lot of the newer LG burners had autobitsetting, but maybe I was wrong.

I just tried using DVD Shrink to do a DVD+R DL and it didn't work either. Here is what it did. Does this help at all?

Other than confirming you're using Ritek +R DL media (that's sold under Memorex's label), no . . .
But I'm not very good at reading Shrink/Nero logs.

As I stated before, use Verbatim +R DL (made in Singapore) only.

By the way, it's common for the first thing to go in burners is its capacity to burn DL well, but until you use Verbatim +R DL media (made in Singapore), you're going to be out of luck in terms of troubleshooting.

Actually, I probably should have had you do this earlier, but I got so hung up on booktypes I forgot. Do steps 3 and 4 from here please.
