New To HD Burning. A Few Questions

Hi . I was looking for a guide or sticky but couldnt fing one. My first question is do I need a HD burner. second if not then what software can I use that is reliable and not too expensive. I currently have an 8800GTX with a Core2Duo at 3.2gh. and no HD drive. Thanks.
