need help CONVERTING AVI MPEG (and others) to DVD

I need a good preferably free program to convert file types like avi mpegs and so forth to DVD files that I can burn to a disc.

wow! I had downloaded without success a few others like the movie machine and so forth, they didn't work... SO I just need to convert to .mov from avi files and I can burn right?

I converted it to the .mov format and I can't get clone dvd to burn it. Do I need the other little files and if so how do I get them? Basically I don't know how to take an avi file, change it to dvd and burn it to a disc that will play in a dvd player.

whats a .vob file? Is this what I need to burn to a dvd disc? thanks again
