General Hardware Question- Blu Ray Burner

I have a 3 or 4 year old LG BluRay burner that has a number of miles on it, but I've never (until now) actually tried to burn a Blu Ray. I sailed through the entire ripping to ISO process using Any DVD and ImageBurn. When trying to burn to a 50GB Verbatim Disc, I twice failed verification on the second layer. Is it likely that the laser is just getting weak? CDs and DVDs still burn well, though not without some coasters. Does a Blu Ray disc require more power? Is it time for a new burner? As you can tell, I'm pretty clueless here.
