Anyway, Perfectdisc is a pretty good defragger, imo.

Drinklyeanddie recommended it to me. So at least 3 English moderators like this program.

Looks like SamuriHL isn't one of the cool kids. ;)

Diskeeper is all you need.

Product activation, slower, has used more system resources, and in the past, has severely screwed up drives . . .

And when it can defrag a full hard drive, let me know.

I am not a fan. http://donnedwards.openaccess.co.za/2007/05/great-defrag-shootout-x-diskeeper-2007.html

"This is just as well, because I could find no way of telling DK to consolidate all the free space and defragment my files. In the case of the C: drive (top image) I have clicked the "defragment" button a number of times but this is the best it can do. Oh, and the very large red file in the picture is a database file used by Microsoft SQL Server, a critical business application.

In the case of my D: drive shown here, notice how the free space is distributed in chunks all over the disk."

I grabbed a trial of perfectdisk home. I've uninstalled DK 2k8 and am installing this trial version. If it's significantly better than DK 2k8 then I'll buy it. We'll see.

"I have left the best feature till last: the uninstall. Unlike version 8 which left residue that made WDD unworkable until I hacked it, this one does restore WDD when you uninstall Diskeeper. I recommend uninstalling it. I did. Twice. Even so, Diskeeper 2007 it left a desktop shortcut behind and a reference in the registry to AUTONTFS. Have these people no shame?"

You may want to check your hard drive to see how much stuff was left behind by Diskeeper's uninstall process. Some people have had nightmares . . .

Just an FYI...Perfectdisk appears to think Diskeeper has been doing a fine job on my drive. It's not fragmented according to the scan.

Who uses that crap? Diskeeper is all you need. :D

Erp. So you support a company that forces its workers to follow Scientologist teachings and punishes them if they don't go along with it? Tsk tsk. Bad company with bad business practices and, personally, I have a bad track record when I used the software. I was a registered user for a few years. You couldn't pay me to use it again.

I'm a long-time PerfectDisk user who doesn't have software that imposes a size limitation on drives forcing you to purchase a more expensive version to defragment your system. I have no reason to switch to anything else so I'm sticking with PerfectDisk until it causes me a problem

I did try O&O which is highly recommended by many but I am sad to report I had issues with it. :(

Since you haven't had any issues with Diskeeper then I'd say stick with it, SamuriHL. :) I'm serious about what I said about Diskeeper but kidding about ripping on you for using it.

I highly highly recommend PerfectDisk and the new version appears to be even faster than PerfectDisk 2008.

PS: Webslinger, why does it always seem like SamuriHL isn't in the "Cool Kids Club"? ;)

I've actually done a recent side by side comparison on someone else's system (uses it for business database and server applications). Diskkeeper could not defrag the entire hard drive (and free space was chunked all over the place). Perfectdisk could.

I'm not opposed to trying something new. I've used DK for many years and simply never have an issue with it. But if there's something that works better, I'm certainly going to look into it. Defragmenting is one of the main tasks that keep a machine running as fast as possible. And while I want my defragmenting to be "set and forget", I don't want it hogging the system resources. So, if perfectdisk is lighter on the system and keeps my machine running in top form, I'll buy it before the discount runs out. On this machine I'll know pretty quick if it's better than DK or not.

It's defragging now. We'll see how my system runs after it's done.

I will say this...the interface is better than DK. DK has always been a cluttered mess. This is pretty straightforward. Kinda like it so far.

Check it out. I'd be interested on your thoughts.

I don't let the AutoPilot run on my system. I prefer manually defragmenting. I do use the boot-time defrag on my C drive. I also use the Aggressively consolidate free space setting on my C drive.
