Dumping & Downgrading firmware on UHD Friendly Devices. (OUTDATED)

I have WH16NS40 firmware from my OG drive with calibration data that I’ve flashed to two WH14NS40 drives. I ordered the wrong drives hence the WH 14 instead of 16, but they work perfectly. Would this help @Leandro Siqueira ?
Do you have the WH16NS40 dump to test here? My BH16NS40 was purchased in 2014 and manufactured in November 2013. Dump with dosflash.

I think you’re straight out of luck, since your drive is old enough that it’s a SVC code NS40 rather than NS50. The NS40s apparently won’t work at all. Its kind of confusing that the SVC code and model number coincide. Sorry bud.

Someone has BH16NS40 firmware dumps with calibration data. My unit is BH16NS40.

Here's original Firmware-Dump (at the bottom) from my BH16NS40 (SVC NS40) unit:
LG_BH16NS40_(SVC_NS40)_August_2014_Original_FW_1.03_dumped_Dosflash_1.7.zip

------------------------------------------------------
Which chipset does BH16NS40 (SVC 40) have?
Dosflash also (pretends) it to have MediaTek 1959 as on BH16NS55.

(But most probably only wrong message from Dosflash),
or just some small other chipset matching, still NOT compatible to NS55)

Thanks for the firmware. When I have a motherboard with IDE mode, I will test. My motherboard is Asus and has no IDE option. I sold the old motherboard.

Hi,
Could anybody confirm that cross-flashing the device LG WH16NS60, having originally installed the firmware WH16NS60 (version 1.00 or 1.01) to LG BH16NS55 firmware (version <= 1.02) made this device really UHD Friendly so that it works with AnyDVD HD with UHD Blue-Rays successfully?

Regards

@diablox

Afaik there are people in this thread who tried it out successfully with a WH16NS60 unit converted to UHD friendly.
To confirm you could search here in this thread here, Search each page systemmatically, by pressing STRG+F / (CTRL+F) in your webbrowser(Search for keyword), then type in WH16NS60 in the search field and press return and do that for each page ;)
-
I could do the conversion for you, but first you need to backup your orignal unit's firmware (first post from Teddy)
https://forum.redfox.bz/threads/dumping-downgrading-firmware-on-uhd-friendly-devices.74479/
(either
"Steps for dumping firmware : (DOS Method)"
or
"Steps for dumping firmware : (Windows Method)"
I prefer the first, both need SATA operation at IDE mode.

And be careful in Dosflash and take your time, because the [R] button for reading the EEPROM is next to the [E]-button on the keyboard!! And [E] would be erasing which is NOT wanted when trying to back up firmware.

"If you forget to make a valid dump of your drive before flashing or try to flash a dump taken on the net, there is a high risk (> 90%) your device will be useless
and you will have to throw it in the WC"

"It is important that the dumped firmware must be the DOSFLASH dump and not the Devilsclaw's one
!!"

"** - This point is the most important of all, as it contains the Drive Signature (DV Value) needed for the bus encryption and it is specific for each drive !!!!"

Hi all,

I've had a good go at downgrading my BH16NS55 drive from the 1.03 Firmware.
Bought it from a retailer and being brand new (manufacture date April '18) it has the latest FW.
Tried on a few machines that I borrowed off others as my MB doesn't support IDE mode.
Ultimately, haven't been able to get DOSFLASH to see the drive (connected via USB - SATA adapter).

I was wondering if anyone with the right setup would be willing to downgrade my drive if I posted it to them in exchange for some beer money?

I am in the UK. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

@Moo Moo
You should connect your drive to the SATA port in your machine. USB to SATA makes problems :) There are some posts about that in the german forum.
If you do that, it will certainly be recognized in Dosflash.(y) Don´t forget to save your old FW at first!

Thanks guys for your feedback.

No he's not. Please read post 396. It's either do it yourself through the guide, of get a different drive and hope that one works.

Hi Kufo,
Thanks for the reply and the tip. Unfortunately I will need to go and try to borrow someone's PC again with the a MB that supports IDE mode - if I can I will connect the drive directly to the MB.

Hi Guys,
I did not save the original firmware for my ASUS BW-16D1HT with Firmware 3.02, manufactured in February, 2018. Does any member have an original firmware dump with the information mentioned that I can use to attempt to revive my drive? Many thanks in advance.

@RISman
Here's your modded firmware/(s)(see at the bottom bar of this post):

As no response from Risman,
so it doesn't appear really urgent and the developers can't afford endless free server space.
@RISman: In case you really need the modded firmware, you can ask back and i'll reattach modded firmware in this post here for your unit temporarily.:)

https://forum.redfox.bz/threads/converting-uhd-friendly-drive-into-uhd-real-and-viceversa.74544/
(I used Teddy's hexrange with "dd" hexediting method to export the appropriate hexrange and offsets from your original WH16NS60 into a clean firmware:

WH16NS60_Risman_convert.zip
(see at the bottom bar of this post)

WH16NS60 converted to:
Risman_WH16NS60_to_BH16NS55_1.00.bin
Risman_WH16NS60_to_BH16NS55_1.01.bin
Risman_WH16NS60_to_BH16NS55_1.02.bin
Risman_WH16NS60_to_BW-16D1HT_3.00.bin
Risman_WH16NS60_to_BW-16D1HT_3.01.bin

Then flash one you prefer with Dosflash.
You can decide which one of those to flash, so you can also crossflash to Asus BW-16D1HT.
I'd choose BH16NS55 FW 1.02 or Asus BW-16D1HT 3.01.

The Asus BW-16D1HT 3.0x firmware rips faster and more silent than LG.
(The BW-16D1HT is just a rebadged BH16NS55, same unit but with specialised firmware from Asus)

If you decided and flashed "Risman_WH16NS60_to_BW-16D1HT_3.01.bin", and you want to update to 3.02, you need to run Asus update utility (=> 3.0(2) max!!) afterwards:
As Asus no longer offers 3.02, and only 3.03 (which is NOT UHD-friendly), here's the Asus update utility 3.02 file attached as well from January 2018:

I'm located in Europe, I'd have a few Core2 motherboards with support SATA-operation in IDE mode support. If you want, you could ship your unit to me, and I'll make the dump.

Or I could ship an old Intel i945P motherboard with cheap CPU and RAM+cooling to you. PM me in case.
A pickup parcel shop for better anonymity would be ideal. "GLS" is daugther company from "Royal Mail", so shipping from here via GLS pickup parcel shop to a Royal Mail delivery office should not be a problem:
https://www.royalmail.com/delivery-and-collection-office-finder/

But maybe you you'll find another persion already in the UK helping you.

Cheers, theosch

Hi Theosch,

Thank you for your help and I'll drop you a PM :)

@theosch

Although I appreciate your last post helping users, there is a very important thing I can't understand. Admins of this forum asked me to avoid to increase the amount of posts of attached firmware for people
asking them and thus I decided to stop all of this. So why are you offering the same help I've always offered before ????

Guides are written to be "user friendly and idiot proof". If I or you have to mod any submitted dump, guide itself would not have any reason to exist.

There are, of course, some steps which require advantage knowledge (like the hex editing process), but there are also some methods which are easier to do and anyone, who have patience to read steps
and apply them, can mod his own firmware for himself.

I hope you'll understand my disappointment.
