computer idiot

Hello, I am a plug & player only.:doh: I have a CISNET with a Pent 4 processor. A few days ago my system did a 'self check' and since then I can't copy anything. I keep getting an error read message and am unable to burn anything. Does anyone have any suggestions besides my 'buy a new computer' theory?

my DVD drive is a _NEC DVD_RW ND-3025A 1.04 04112400
I have Windows XP 2002 on an ACPI Uniprocessor PC
Disk drives read Foxconn CF, SD, MS, SM
I've tried Wild Hogs, Casino Royal and #00 NE united states versions
