Hi all

No doubt you have all missed me, well maybe not... :) but here's what happened, my Toughpower 750W PSU chucked a wobbly after only 2 years - turned my system off to upgrade my burner and the the computer would not even power up. Took system to where I purchased the PSU and they verified the 750W PSU had died, luckily it came with a 5 year warranty.

Finally after a week, received a brand new PSU from Thermaltake, and so far so good. I have also removed my old Pioneer IDE Burners, and now have a Pioneer DVR-212 SATA Burner and a Pioneer DVR-216 sata burner, and god these are damn fast and so quiet.

Naturally updated AnyDVD and noticed a lot faster reading time to search for protections on DVD'S. Plus got invited to Windows 7 beta and am running it as I type.

These are currently the only power supplies I trust: http://www.pcpower.com

However, I note that power supplies across all brands are susceptible (more susceptible than some other components) to shipping damage. If a power supply has been shipped across countries and has been shook vigorously on its way to your doorstep that's a good way to shorten its lifespan. I've seen some really messed up Antec power supplies internally (you can see where stuff has come loose due to brutal shipping methods).

750 watts, that's a lot of power, glad you found the problem easily.

For a system with the specs I have (in my signature) and a 7800GTX video card, the Thermaltake 750W Modular Quad Rail PSU is the best option. The guy at the computer store said out of all the 750W he has sold, this is the first one that he has had returned dead. Got it i January 2007 the original - only lasted just under 2 years.

I previously had Silverstone, but they are crap - poor quality and not reliable. I've heard nothing but praise regarding Thermaltake PSU's and they come with a 5 year warranty, which is almost unheard of - they just sent me a brand new one.

Hi Webby

Here in Australia, we dont have a very large selection of PSU's from our online retailers, including PCPower. Hence, I went for Thermaltake based on numerous reviews, plus it was covered under warranty luckily.

God struth these SATA burners are so damn fast at reading and writing and whisper quiet - wouldnt go back to IDE drives - Pioneer 216 and Pioneer 212 and just upgraded the firmware last night from Pioneer's Japanese page.

Really? There seems to be a big list here:

Yeah, that was a good thing.

I have the 216 and the 215. I crossflashed the 216 to a dvr-s16J (or dvr-216L) to get labelflash support: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=43868 (you need the kernel), and I also used mediacodespeededit to make the drive region free and support autobitsetting: http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/

Be careful if you're doing this (I don't take any responsibility if you brick your drive). You will also void your burner's warranty.

honestly, I wouldnt / dont need to do that with the firmware, I have anydvd to make the movies region free, and can keep my region 4 drives intact.

If you don't need to, you don't need to, but without changing the firmware, you will have no bitsetting support for DVD+R and DVD+RW media. And you also gain labelflash support (but I've not tried it).

Whats the advantages of bitsetting - as I've had no issues backing up any movies on either DVD-R DL / DVD+R DL / DVD-R / DVD+R.
