Several films I own have music that I have not been able to source from any means that I can find, so is it possible to lift the music soundtrack from the DVD's themselves?

indeed you can, I did have a free app for doing it but I'm at work right now and can't remember what it was called. if you're only doing it as a one off give this one a go:

it's not free but it does give you a 30 day non-gimped trial.
 
I use "DVD Audio Extractor"!

It´s very easy to use!
