I've found to stay away from downloading Windows update KB890830. Since I've stopped downloading and unstalled it my problems are in the past. BTW KB890830 is the malicious software removal tool update the second tuesday of each month. My solution works at least for me that's all everything backs up with no snags at all.
 
You might want to mention which version of windows you're running on. I'm on Win 7 SP1 and have no issues letting it install all windows updates on hundreds of machines that we've built
