Bluray titles w/ TrueHD and 5.1 PCM do not work over SPDIF

Great find....I hope it is true!
I thought spdif was 200kbps. That's a big jump - 125 times faster? Is that a misprint? And what kind of receiver could use that? It certainly can't use the spdif specification, so what spec is it using?

Concerning the XE1, that update is not going to happen. The XE1 can not be upgraded to output DTS HD and Dolby True HD via bitstream.
That's odd, because I got my information from Toshiba Europe about 1.5 months ago, and then they claimed it's coming in September update.

No receiver can use that. It's way above the SPDIF standard.

It should work with the nvidia cards that allow spdif passthrough to the onboard HDMI. IE, I have a 7600gt with spidif passthrough, which then could theorectically be connected to an amp with HDMI for video and true HD audio.

Just to make that clear. There will be an update concerning e.g. the 24p stuff etc.

But the XE1 can technically not be upgraded to support bitstream output of the new audio formats. That is what Toshiba said.

Well, you're not transmitting the audio data over SPDIF then, are you? :)

But the pass thru is still only rated for standard spdif on this card so you still wouldn't have enough bandwidth to play out the True HD audio

Well, my point is, everyone's waiting for an HDMI solution for the PC, this could be it.
I've got an ATi 2600XT which can do audio over HDMI as well. Haven't tested the feature yet; apparently it's not an SPDIF passthrough but something closer to real HDMI audio.

According to ATI's site the 2600 has HDMI with built in 5.1 sound

Why would it be rated at all ? It's just passes a signal through to the HDMI.

because it's an spdif pass thru that conforms to the spdif standard. None of the graphics cards will output above 5.1 at the moment, even the new ATI ones only output 5.1 sound

Doesn't really help. Even if the digital port supports True HD, no one else does. And no one needs a True HD bitstream. What we need is a soundcard with 7.1 Linear PCM output over a fast digital port like HDMI, best thing would be a graphics card / sound card combo. AMD/ATI tried with their Radeon 2000 series, but from what I heard it doesn't support 5.1/7.1 PCM

I have a motherboard that has HDMI and sound combo now

Problem for me is I dont have an HDMI pre-amp to decode hdmi sound.
Are you saying that coax output from
http://www.auzentech.com/site/products/x-fi_prelude.php#releasedate
is worse than using MB on board spdif optical sound?

for passing unmodified spdif from powerdvd, I would think the spdif output from the MB or soundcard would be basically the exact same thing. Though I would use the soundcard, just for good measure - plus that would be better for music/mp3's/whatever since the soundcard has some excellent software for converting stereo sound to dolby 5.1.

Does your receiver or pre-amp or whatever have analog inputs? The 6 or 8 channel analog outputs of the auzentech would be the best to use, other than the hdmi itself - that would still give you the ability to use 5.1 (or 7.1) uncompressed PCM as the audio source in powerDVD.

this is the amp I have
http://www.cinenow.com/uk/materiel.php3/tid,14/id,1360/
My question would be how you get 8 inputs from a sound card into this beast?
Why is everything so complicated :)
Plug your 8 channels from the soundcard into the 8 analong inputs on the back of the pre-amp. If you click on the pic of the back of your pre-amp, the 8 analog inputs are the 8 inputs on the top left of the pic. There are 16 rca jacks there - 8 for analog in, and 8 for analog out.

Soz for confusion i mean there are not eight conectors in back of sound card so which hole in the sound card would i expect to use and then i guess its an 1 to eight cable :(
Wonder if the card comes with it and if not who would sell such a beast.

Ow cheers for your help by the way.

Ow ive just seen this
Four 3.5mm 8 channel line output connectors in rear panel (FL/FR/C/SW/RL/RR/RSL/RSR)
So I guess each one is a dual output so i need 3.5phono to a dual phono output for my amp.

Read the manual, it will tell you in there how to get the outputs, normally you have a stereo 3.5mm plug 1 end to 2 mono plugs that fit the back of your amp, and you need 3 or 4 of these cables. They'll plug into the coloured audio sockets on the mothereboard

glad to help!
The auzentech has four 3.5mm female jacks in the back. They are labled Front, Back, Center/Sub, and Side Surround. Just use four normal stereo 3.5mm to dual rca patch cords.

The biggest problem I had was what to use for patch cords. I didn't want to use just the normal cables that are found at all the brick and morter stores, I wanted something better. But you are limited because those 3.5mm jacks are rather close together. Monster Cable makes a decent 3.5mm to rca patch cord that they market to the ipod/portable mp3 player, and that almost works. The 3.5mm jack is still a little too big though. I only have 6 channel inputs, and since I already had 2 gold plated 3.5mm to rca female adapters (no cables, just the small plug, you know?), I used those plus one Monster Cable cord that I picked up at Radio Shack. It was a tight fit though. I don't like mixing cables, but I figured it would only be temporary until I could find a suitable replacement online.

I just went to radioshack.com, and these look half-way decent - especially for the money. But you can look for something better if you want the absolute best.

You might want to bring the card into a store and see if those 3.5mm plugs are too big to fit side by side.
EDIT: though all 3 are labled "web only", so forget about going to the store to check on the size. No wonder I didn't see those cables when I went to the store a few months ago.
EDIT2: and this is the monster cable I used, since they had it at the store - but I don't think 4 of these will fit side by side, but you can go in and check them out for free - probably worth the trip:
