This one fails when trying to back up with read errors I've had trouble backing up BBC discs before but can't see whats wrong here.

Defective and / or dirty disc and / or drive.
 
well they both can be bad. Its been proven in the past that just because discs look and play fine, doesnt mean they're fine for ripping
