I have yet to install them yet or read the release notes but they are officially released.

Direct link to the Catalyst 8.12 release notes in PDF forma: < Removed because it expired. Go to the website for the PDF download link. >

There are major changes/additions to this driver release.

Support DXT Texture Formats option gone

Can anyone let me know if, under Vista 64, they have the "more settings" option under "3D"?

If I update 8.12 directly over 8.11 that option disappears.

Consequently, "Support DXT Texture Formats" doesn't appear to be listed anywhere.

It makes me wonder if they have just made it always set to on now and you aren't given an option.

It certainly wasn't enabled with the leaked 8.12 RC3 release. That's why Fallout 3 didn't work properly for me (no textures loading in Grayditch roads, which leads to crashing). And since the option to turn "Support DXT Texture Formats" on wasn't to be found anywhere, I had to revert back to 8.11.

Nice release notes, ATI.
Thanks for explaining that you removed the "More settings" options.
I really appreciate that!

I wonder if I should have uninstalled 8.11, rebooted, installed 8.12, and rebooted.

Well, I did a full uninstall, reboot, install, reboot. The More Settings is gone.

Yeah, that's gone under XP 32 bit Pro SP3 as well.

I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, reboot . . .

Fallout 3 works with Cats 8.12, so perhaps ATI did enable "Support DXT Texture Formats" by default, and the option to turn that off no longer exists.

Regarding video playback, I have good things to report:

VISTA32:
Additional refresh rates. Especially 23Hz (23.976) is interesting, if you don't want to use ReClock or if you are obsessed with bitstreaming. ;)

XP:
HDCP works again with the most recent PowerDVD 7/8 builds.

Performance Improvements (from DLaD's post)
• Fallout 3 – performance gains of up to 15% for Single card mode.

• Fallout 3 – performance gains of up to 15% for Single card mode.

Performance gains have nothing to do with missing textures in games (which specifically led to crashing in Fallout 3).

The problem is that with RC3 Catalyst 8.12, there was no option to enable "Support DXT Texture Formats". In fact, there still isn't with the official release.

Hopefully, no one has this issue anymore: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=900847

because if they do, with 8.12, there's no longer a fix.

I'm building a new PC tonight with an I7 processor and HD4870x2 graphics card with Vista x64. I was quite pleased that there was a new driver out, so I visited the download page.

However right at the top it mentions 8.11 I7 / X58 hotfix driver. Now I'm confused. Is it better to take this one or 8.12 ?

Anyone got any experience here ?

Thanks.

If you follow the hotfix link and scan down a little you'll find this:

This hotfix

• Improves performance in various Direct3D and OpenGL applications on the X58 platform. AMD's next official ATI Catalyst release (ATI Catalyst 8.12) will include these optimizations.

ATI Catalyst 8.12 is now available. It should contain the hotfix fixes. Go with the v8.12 drivers. It would make no sense for v8.11 drivers to have i7/X58 fixes and not the later v8.12 drivers.

Also, if you read the knowledge base info you'll see the hotfix information dated November 20th, 2008.

ATI releases a new Catalyst 8.12 hotfix

Fixes HD 4850 Vista Crossfire X

ATI has released a new hotfix that should fix the HD 4850 Crossfire X mode issue in Windows Vista. This should fix both the black screen and boot OS failure with two or more ATI Radeon HD 4850 cards in Crossfire X mode under Windows Vista OS.

Until now users with HD 4850 Crossfire running Windows Vista OS, had to stick to 8.11 Catalyst and according to some reports those that have two HD 4870 are still stuck with the previous driver.

Catalyst 8.12 was something that we eagerly awaited, but it looks like major fixes and performance gains will come with version 9.1.

You can find the new hotfix here.

Has anyone had any issues installing this driver? I have attempted a few times now, and every single time I attempt to install 8.12 my system BSoD's (STOP 0x116 with module atimkdag.sys saying that the video driver did not respond in time and was not recoverable.) I always remove the previous driver first with the latest installer, reboot and then install the newer driver package. I even removed the Realtek HD Audio and HDMI Audio drivers and it still crashed. But, when it reboots, I can launch CCC and it shows that 8.12 is indeed installed. This is the first Catalyst driver since 8.7 that I have had an issue like this.
