Just to let you guys know that the exact same issue occurs on recent nvidia cards with built-in HDMI out.
Those recent cards have an onboard Nvidia HD Audio chip built-in, they don't take spdif anymore.
Not only this renders your dedicated audio card/onboard audio obsolete, but of course as with everything software nvidia, it's completely ****** up, "pops" everywhere, no more hardware sound buffers, teh joy.
VERY glad I kept my old card. So buyer beware..

I'm sorry, I don't. This problem annoyed the hell out of a lot of us for a LONG LONG time. However, as of I believe Catalyst 10.8 the problem has been resolved so I don't know what to tell you unfortunately. Anti-pop really shouldn't be necessary anymore. I don't know your setup, but, you could try the Realtek HDMI driver and see if that works any better. The downside is that driver isn't compatible with ArcSoft TMT.
Still isn't? You can still use ReClock, right?
Anyway, some receivers cut the audio when there is no sound.
See this for a possible (though unlikely IMO) solution:

Also I should have remembered this when this question popped up in the past, but I had this same problem with the HK ARV254, the audio was cut by the receiver. I was using a 4550 at the time.
I'm confused because I finally upgraded a couple of months ago to 11.2, then 11.3 and 11.4 and as far as I can see they all still suffer from the old bug (sound is dropped completely when no audio is being played - all my channel input indicators onmy amp disappear during normal silence). On top of that they all seem to suffer from the "mute bug" - audio goes away and never returns after Windows audio is muted. So I'm currently using 11.4 with the old 10.7 audio driver, that I can "fix" with "anti-pop" and at least does not suffer the mute bug.I'm sorry, I don't.
