I'm having a huge problem with pop ups. I started a thread about it and got a bunch of good advice. I tried most of it (ad muncher, spybot s&d, etc...) and nothings even slowed the pop ups down. A computer tech advised me to use some anti-virus software. A good friend of mine suggested AVG, but I'm not sure about trying it. Wouldn't a big name company be better, like Norton, McAffee, or Symantec?

Disclaimer: Right now, I'm running no anti-virus software and have been lucky enough (knock on wood) to not have viruses. I figure if I ever get a virus, I'll just format the HD with the OS on it and start from scratch, no biggie. But, my main concern is the pop-ups.

Thanks in Advance,

How do you know you have no viruses?

Ah-ha, very good point. Maybe I have a virus specifically designed for pop-ups.

AVG is much better than Norton or McAfee. Symantec and Norton are the same thing. I had Norton, and when I installed AVG, it found 8 virus' that Norton never saw. A friend had McAfee, and installed AVG. It also found virus' on his computer that McAfee never saw. I don't remember how many. This past year, AVG found and automatically removed two worms, on my computer. AVG is free. Norton and McAfee are not.

You can get AVG Free Edition here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2

The best thing I've found for pop ups though, is Firefox.
There is one site in particular, that I go to a lot, that worried me to death with pop ups. I couldn't hardly move my mouse, without a pop up. Since I got Firefox, there's been no more pop ups. Even if it didn't have the popup blocker, I like Firefox MUCH better than Internet Explorer.
Good luck!

It would be malware if it just did pop-ups and there are a LOT of them out there. The question is how did it get there? There are a number of combined packages involving a trojan and then malware is downloaded from a site after it is on your system and can result more malware, viruses or trojans being placed on the vulnerable computer.

For a free solution I recommend AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. For a shareware solution you might wish to try Kasperesky Anti-Virus or Eset NOD32 Antivirus. You can use trial versions of Kaspersky and NOD32. NOD32 is definitely lighter on resources and at one time was used by Microsoft in their release labs. Kaspersky is well-known for its detection rates. I like all three but I've never used AVG as a real-time scanner.

Is Firefox just an alternative to IE? Does it work the same?

For those of you who use AVG, is it worth it to pay for the full version? Or does it work just as well using the free version.

I recommended antivir, which have a better interface than avast and it is free too.

IE is known to have some problems, but if you dont't go to crack/pron website, you probably never have this kinds of problems.

But if you think you need a safe internet browser, i recommended opera ( http://www.opera.com/download/ ), which is the fastest and the safest browser for windows.

If your problems come without using IE, check your hard disc for spyware :
Use a², spybot or ad-aware to eradicate them. ( http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html - http://www.lavasoft.com/ - take the free version )

If the problem is still here, you must use hijackthis ( http://www.hijackthis.de/en ), and post the log here ;)

I've been using Firefox for several yrs. and I can't remember the last time I saw a pop-up. I install AVG Free on every PC that I sell and/or repair.

No need to buy the full retail version of AVG, unless you're a business. The free version will do what you need.

Firefox is just a browser, like IE, only better.........
