occasionally this site is subject to spam posts.

how about incorporating one of those security boxes containing numbers/letters which you have to type into a blank box before you submit your post?

captchas?

They don't work. There are idiots that help spam bots solving them for free porn.

It's really a bad idea. That would be a torture for forum members like James (4.123 posts) or Webslinger (16.923 posts).
Aren't captchas forbidden according to the "United Nations Convention against Torture (and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment)"? :)

If the recaptcha was made mandatory I would stop visiting as I have enough trouble typing as it is. :D

God... I hate those boxes.... I have to type the scrabbled letters/words half a dozen times before I get one right. The old eyes just ain't what they use to be. :(

CAPTCHA is cumbersome and annoying to legitimate users. I have run across sites that made too much use of CAPTCHA, IMHO, and, honestly, I don't visit those sites again. If I have to jump through hoops just to access a site then I'll go elsewhere.

On my board, we limit people who can make new threads by post count. :)

That's my 2 cents on it.

I would really prefer having two sections of forums: one for registered Slysoft users and one for unregistered Slysoft users. Obviously I would feel more inclined to spend time helping/responding to registered Slysoft users, and the unregistered ones could deal with the spam (until the mods get around to removing it).

But I don't believe that's what Slysoft wants. Slysoft wants to help everyone, regardless of whether they are unregistered users.

It'd get messy rather quick, I think. We've had spammers register for my board, but it's never done them any good since the first thing they try to do is create a new thread for whatever they're selling. I've seen a few at other boards that just tack onto existing threads, but that's quite the anomoly to be honest. There's wonders that can be done with vBulletin, Webhead. :)

You need to be registered here in order to post. I'm talking about having to register Slysoft software (that is, you don't get access to the registered user forums until you enter your license code).

So you'd have two sections: ones for those who purchased and registered Slysoft software--and the other section for trial members.

I still think it'd be messy. A subforum for trial members and a whole forum for registered members. Both would still have the same problems, right?

Works fine for a lot of forums (including Alcohol's), but Slysoft would prefer to treat everyone equally, which I suppose has its own merits.

I'd still try my idea first. It'll stop all the repeat threads you get from the new guys with problems with the same disc. Less threads to merge and once they've posted for a while and gotten the hang of the way the forums work, they'll have the required number of posts to make new threads and won't be an issue to you. But, hell, I've got a hidden forum where people can go if they've made a donation to my board. heh

It happens often here. Trust me. Spammers frequently reply to existing threads here.

And I don't want members posting in an existing thread. Read my signature. I want new troubleshooting threads to be created instead of people posting about an issue they think is the same (when it really isn't) in existing threads.
