Alternative to Windows Media Player??

I have been using Windows Media Player to convert CD's to MP3 files to play on my MP3 player. I have found it to be bulky, unreliable and in many ways a big pain in how many things it "automatically" does in the "background" without giving the user much control over it.

Any suggestions? I was looking at CloneCD, but what I really want to do is convert CD files to MP3.

Clonecd doesn't convert to MP3s.

Use www.exactaudiocopy.de with http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm (lame MP3 encoder)

I always rip the CD to the HDD as a WAV file with Exact Audio Copy and then use BlueRazorLame [an official mod of RazorLame] along with the latest stable LAME release to convert to MP3.
