I noticed that the first time AnyDVD scanned this title it reported 47 bad sector protections. After generating the logfile, it reloaded normally, but only reported 45 bad sector protections. I can't seem to get it to report "47" again, no matter what I do. I wonder if anyone else has had this phenomenon with this disc or any other for that matter.

Below are the status reports that I received. The first one contains the "47 BSP" and the second one the "45 BSP".

Ok, scanned the DVD on a different computer, and this time it reported "46" bad sector protections....this is really inconsistent...both computers have the same exact Sony Optiarc drive (although different firmware version), and both using the same version of AnyDVD.

This time AnyDVD still reports "46 BSP" after the logfile scan:

I also tried not using CSS archive and deleting the CSS key that was stored in the registry, same result.

Tried the DVD on my work computer, which also has the same optiarc drive, same firmware version as the first computer, and it reports "46 BSP".

Tried the DVD with AI scanner "Always enabled" and got the "47 BSP" again.

setting AI scanner back to automatic shows "47 BSP" still. I'm confused....

Interesting. The most important question - does it work? (Test playback with PC player software, check structural problems with CloneDVD title preview).

Will burn a copy and test with PDVD10 and PS3. May not happen till tomorrow though, I have to go home and sleep for a midnight shift tonight.

addendum: will also try a freshly installed xp system with just anydvd, no other filters or dvd programs, just raw xp and anydvd and see what that generates.

Hi James,

I tried playing the disc with PowerDVD 9 and NO AnyDVD on PC, no problem. Played disc with PowerDVD 9 and AnyDVD enabled, no problem.

I have tested this again, and here are the numbers:

1st scan = AnyDVD AI automatic = 47 bad sector protections
2nd scan = AnyDVD AI enabled = 47 bad sector protections
3rd scan = AnyDVD AI automatic + logfile scan = 46 bad sector protections
4th scan = AnyDVD AI automatic (after logfile scan) = 46 bad sector protections

5th scan = uninstalled AnyDVD, reinstalled, rebooted, rescanned with AI automatic = 47 bad sector protections

Why such an inconsistency between scans? On my gaming computer at home, I still get 45 BSP.

I have all my Sony 24x Optiarcs upgraded to firmware version 1.03 now.

I am going to do the fresh XP install test and let you know what happens with that.

Well at least this identifies the issue as a "curiosity" as opposed to a potential problem.

I kinda like this stuff myself; the old "why does it do it that way" thing.

my sentiments exactly.... "why?"

OK, I installed a fresh version of Windows XP 32-bit PRO SP3. No extra codecs, video programs or burning programs were installed. I installed AnyDVD and with it set to AI Automatic, it produced 46 bad sector protections. Creating a logfile also produced 46 bad sector protections. I guess "46" wins, since that is what was produced after several tries on the other computers, except my gaming PC which still will only show "45" for whatever reason.

I'm wondering, why so many bad sector protections? Has there been any other DVD that has had so many BSP's? I haven't seen one yet. Below is a list of movies that I have on this hard drive that have some BSP. I have more on the shelf, but that would take too long to do. If anyone else knows of a movie that has a high BSP count, I would certainly like to know about it.

#BSP's = MOVIE NAME [YEAR RELEASED]
10 = EXTRACT [2009]
11 = COLLEGE ROAD TRIP - WALT DISNEY'S [2008]
12 = CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC [2009]
13 = WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE - THE MOVIE - EXTENDED EDITION [2009]
16 = PONYO [2009]
18 = MICHAEL JACKSON'S - THIS IS IT [2009]
19 = THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG [2009]
21 = I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF [2009]
22 = IMAGINE THAT [2009]
23 = BROTHERS [2009]
25 = 2012 [2009]
29 = EVERYBODY'S FINE [2009]
45-47 = ALICE IN WONDERLAND - SPECIAL UN-ANNIVERSARY EDITION [2010]

thanks for everyone's help, az_raiden
