Can someone explain why I can not RIP a movie with NERO 7.xx (using AnyDVD 6.193) with AI Scanner on and ripping the movie only works, while turning the AI Scanner off.

What is the use of the AI Scanner anyway ?

There are just a few movies that don't work yet with the AI scanner, they're working on it.
If ALL your titles wont rip with AI scanner - it might be another issue.

As Clams Canino states, there are a few movies that don't work with AI Scanner, and for those that do, I recommend you review each title set to ensure that the AI scanner hasn't adversely altered it. For instance, I found that one of the recent betas truncated the audio and video optimization routine on the Ratatouille region 1 DVD. The main move, deleted scenes, and other bonus features seem OK, but the VTS that contains the video and audio optimization routine terminates abruptly during the speaker setup phase. I played the VTS manually and verified that it had been truncated from the original DVD version.

It seems that AI truncated several VTS on this title as a necessary method of getting rid of protection, but it went too far on this particular VTS.

Meanwhile, this title would not rip with AI scanning disabled, so I'm at a loss for how to get a perfect full DVD backup on Ratatouille with AnyDVD. (I backed up with AnyDVD set for AI scanning (default and deep scan produced same results) and used CloneDVD in full DVD9 mode.)

chum and fordman, it might be a good thing to report these movies starting with posting a zipped log file.

Will do. I'll post under one of the Ratatouille threads. I encountered this issue right before going on business travel for a week and when I wrote this I was still away from the computer where I copied the DVD and still have the files. That's why I was less specific about the AnyDVD version I used, though I believe it was 6.1.9.6 beta, and according to Webslinger all subsequent betas have only addressed HD issues.

I'll certainly do my part to help make the AI scanner and AnyDVD more reliable.

    Thanks,

OK, I have installed AnyDVD 6.3.0.1 beta and confirm that AnyDVD (presumably the AI scanner) still butchers the video/audio setup title in Ratatouille, which is contained in the VTS_12_1.VOB file. I've attached the .zip file made by the logging function.

It appears that AnyDVD is truncating this file from 29,284,352 bytes to 6,301,696 bytes. The symptom is that the video tests work fine, but when moving on to the audio portion, only the center channel is available, and when one presses the "enter" button on either at set-top DVD remote or with a software player on the computer, the rest of the routine is missing and the test completes prematurely. I can only guess that the AI scanner is being too agressive on this title set in an effort to get rid of "invalid cell pieces" or some such protection.

Webslinger listed and referenced my previous message on prior betas as a possible problem with those version, but it is no longer listed on the release notes for 6.3.0.1, so I wanted to advise that the bug still exists, and while the main movie and other bonus features are OK, the AnyDVD/CloneDVD combination (which I used) still seems at a loss to make a complete/perfect backup of Ratatouille, region 1. I'll try the competitor's product to see if I fare any better. (UPDATE: DVDFab 4.0.1.6 beta makes a perfect backup of all titles, without truncating any of them to excess, and it chose to disable it's pathplayer technology after analyzing the DVD. Note that I didn't try with earlier DVDFab versions. So, now I have my perfect backup, but I look forward to being able to rely solely on AnyDVD...)

I'll attach the summary screen for the protection and the directories (both on the disc with AnyDVD active, and the directory of the files on my hard drive created by CloneDVD 2.9.1.2 with AnyDVD 6.3.0.1 running in the background with the default thorough AI scanning enabled.

    Regards,

    James & Webslinger:

I will test this by tomorrow, and I'll even use a different computer, a freshly configured Vista-based laptop that I purchased recently.

If this has been fixed along with the other recent fixes, it will go a long way in inspiring confidence in the AI scanning module's ability to differentiate valid content from protection. It already appears that the updates needed with each week's new releases have decreased, so there is definite improvement.

The audio configuration test works properly now?

I'll make a concerted effort to test it tonight to verify that we are talking about the same issue.

lostinlodos: It is easy to verify just by looking at the VTS_12_1.VOB file, which 6.3.0.1 truncated from ~29 MB to ~6 MB. When this file is played separately it's apparent that the remainder of the audio configuration test was just chopped off.

We must not be talking about the same disc version, neither the backup nor original have a 12_X.vob series. Infact, my disc ends at 09.

OK, I tested Ratatouille with AnyDVD 6.3.0.2 Beta both with CloneDVD and with AnyDVD Ripper with the AI scanner set at the default level.

Unfortunately, BOTH methods still yield the truncated VTS_12_1.VOB file which is shortened to the same 6,301,696 bytes that 6.3.0.1 and previous versions produced. This VOB file contains the audio/video test title that is fond under the setup menu.

This set of tests was down on a Laptop running Windows Vista, while the previous tests performed with 6.3.0.1 and previous versions were done on a desktop running Windows XP Pro SP2.

So, the AI Scanner is apparently still mistaking valid content for copy protection. Two interesting differences from the protection status log found in 6.3.0.1 are as follows:

    1. 6.3.0.2 does not show "Found & removed invalid VOBUs!" like the 6.3.0.1 log, and

    2. There are now only 26 potential bad sector protections found compared to the 27 found with 6.3.0.1.

So, the AI scanning engine changes do make a difference in the status log, but apparently not in the files that are ripped...

Recommend keeping this as an open issue, and check all titles thoroughly on any ripped DVD. It was only by doing that that I found this issue.

The entire status log produced by 6.3.0.2 follows:

Please upload the .zip file using Anydvd 6.3.0.2:

a)Click the red fox icon on your toolbar.
    b) Navigate to "Program Settings".
    c) Click "enable logging".
    d) Click "ok".
    e) Put the problematic original disc in your optical drive/reader.
    f) Go to your My Documents folder
    g) You will see a zip file called "Anydvd_Info_titleofmydisc.zip"
    h) When replying or posting in the Slysoft forums, look for the icon that looks like [IMG]
    i) if you don't see that icon, click the "go advanced" button. You should see that icon now. Click the paperclip.
    j) a small pop-up screen should appear (if it doesn't please ensure your browser is enabled to allow pop-ups from the Slysoft forums)
    k) click the "Browse" button, and locate and select the .zip file you created.
    l) click "upload"

Strange. Mine is also a R1 single-disc version, but purchased at Best Buy. There were a total of 13 title sets (VTS) on my disc, though AnyDVD correctly identified VTS_13 as a bogus one and removed it entirely. I'm guessing it mistakenly thinks that valid parts of VTS_12 are "invalid cell pieces", and that's why it's truncating it from 29 MB to 6 MB.

The funny thing is - according to the log, AI Scanner doesn't touch VTS12 at all....
